Now Duke is VERY poorly:-(

Normally if a clutch is worn it starts slipping, that's what makes me think it is the cover plate springs - I had the same thing on a Viva years ago. Someone in the past may have just replaced the pressure plate and re-used the rest and it has finally given up.

Yeah you see it never did any of that? So you think i should just replace the lot then? I suppose, if it doesn't all need replacing i could just e-bay the rest of it and recoup some dosh:)

hello,
my jumping problem was down to er... careless gearbox building! I had one of the selector rods the wrong way round, so unless you've been dismantling boxes in your sleep (there was a time I could have done that!) it won't be your problem.

Does it jump out when you lift off? I think a worn syncromesh can do that (it would be a gearbox in bits job I'm afraid)

In my (humble) opinion, it sounds like a new clutch is on the cards so go and get that done, If you have a spare gearbox knocking about get it swapped over, if not don't worry and just have fun with the van with the new clutch and see what happens (keep an eye on it).

You could change the gearbox oil and have a look at the stuff that comes out, if its all manky with shiny gold bits in, then you may have a syncromesh problem.

Out of interest do you have an overdrive?

hope some of this helps

cheers

Rupert

Try a bungee cord hooked around the gear-stick and attached to your seat or similar. That might keep it in gear for you!

Oh, hang on, then it would probably pull it out of 1st and 3rd............................ I'll get my coat.......

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me? I'M GETTING A HIGHWAYMAN !!!

It only jumps out of gear on the occasion. I checked the oil and it has no mankyness in it - it's a nice colour so don't think it has that problem? I don't have an OD box in it but am looking into getting one soon. A clutch for me then i guess:-( just cannot fathom why it went so quickly?

Only problem with that is if it doesnt last the warranty period then the garage will tend to blame your supplied parts....they may even be right.
Decent garages should only charge the same price as if you had supplied the parts yourself, they should be content with the markup they make from their trade discount.

Poor Duke :( sorry to hear he's poorly... hope you get him sorted soon, and not too expensive... Hate it when Smurf is ill :(

Thanks guys for all the advice. I will bare that in mind Jules;-) my garage is pretty good as we live in a small village and he values the custom. He's very fair on price normally. I know Cazz it's a nightmare. I hate it when things go wrong cos i'm unfortunately a dumb ass when it comes to fixing things. I've had enough though so i'm going to start trying my hand at small things and just teach myself some bare essentials;-)
I went out there today and started polishing things. The previous owner had sprayed the back bumpers silver and over time it has faded to a horrid grey so i Nitromorsed them and revealed the stainless steel. It don't look the best but it's better than before. I can put up with it until i get them rechromed;-)

Colin and i are pretty clueless too, but with guidance from here, we manage to do a bit ourselves, i even changed the water pump and thermostat myself on smurf and was really proud of myself :D
