If he's Iranian, that would probably mean that his brother would be Iranan too - which in turn would mean that the brother wouldn't be driving a Hillman Hunter but rather the Iranian national symbol which is the Paykan Hunter, not? :D:D

I had a collegue from Iran a while back, and he referred to the Paykan as just that: A national symbol ! Not sure I'd choose the Hunter as my own national symbol if I had to choose one, but there you go ;)

I have had a similar experience before, it turned out to be clogged oil pick up screen/filter in the sump preventing oil pick up.
The excess smoke from oil filler could be from excess heat within the engine "cooking off" from lack of oil circulation. Most old engines breath a bit anyway.

Fingers crossed, hopefully its something like that for you.

In my case the oil warning light was not noticed and my dad continued to drive until the engine blew up. A con rod snapped and went through the side of the crank case.

I would have had a go at it myself but I`m stupidly busy atm.

Missing the big dented and rusty thing from my drive though :(

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.
 
Hopefully not needed but anyway in case you were wondering, here's the company in question. Nice picture set of them building the Talbot engines up. I'm actually down there tomorrow or Thursday if you did want one picking up to save postage, I'm Sheffield based so maybe nearer for people to pick up, bit of a long shot and I'm not entirely sure if they are built to order or not.

Summer's Coming



I went to a Sunbeam Alpine Owners club meeting last night. A guy there I got talking to was an motor engineer for BT when they had a fleet of 400 or so PBs. I asked him if he ever had dealt with a broken oil pump - and he said never. Mind you, he also said he had never known a big end to go - and that is what happened to me. He did say that the vans were at most up to 7 years old when he worked on them.

Lots of interesting stories of how they tended to have issues with the gearbox linkage, engine fires due to earth straps not reattached after work (and the choke cable heating up and causing a fire) and how the high tops were particularly unstable with a heavy load on the roof.

They also knew this Paul Furz chap from Greenwood Automotive. Apparently he is very cagey about revealing what is in all the crates he has.... :). I have to admit I am tempted by an engine for the Super Minx, but I already have a good block and £180 for a set of HC pistons seems a bit steep.
 
Well the cause seems to have been an oil pressure relief valve stuck open. Thanks to Martin Maltas for sorting it at very short notice. He says it now appears to be running Ok. Time will tell if any damage was done.
