Normal engine temp?

hopefully this will help paul, thermostat starts 82-89c fully open @ 100c..run it slightly cold will give more power, slightly hot more ecconomy, there are probably 2 different temperature thermostats available ;)diesel runs slightly cooler :)

After 15 mins on the road the temp gauge says...

My pb's gauge never goes high unless stood still running for over about 20mins. Not sure if this is normal but mine also has two fans in it, one either side of the radiator, with a switch on the dash board to turn the second fan on.

i drove to yorkshire halfway mine was a little over your reading!but i would still drive yours until it got a bit higher, but that doesn't mean theres not something that could be done!

Was this your reaction when you found it missing (turn the sound up first)

Yup, sat for a good 40 mins in Ashbourne traffic at easter and we know how hot it was then.

Nothings been done as far as i'm aware, still running the viscous fan and tiny little rad etc...

Mine stayed just over the bottom red for 150-170 miles then rose to midway, upon turning the engine off and stopping it then goes up to near 120 (this is why I now have no radiator) I think my temp gauge is reading very wrong, it goes up before 30mph down between 35-45mph up over 45mph and boils when the engine is not running?

didn't someone (Nancy and Tramper?) have gauge problems which may have been put down to a high resistance in the sender unit wire?

I think that was Chris and Tim, there was a short on the wire from the sender unit.

Ours seems very similar to Paul Fordy's readings, after about 45 mins we then creep up to a needle's width away from red though. We then switch on the electric supplementary fan which the previous owner fitted to the front of the radiator. Temperature 'stabilises' between there are Paul Fordy's pic - although does fluctuate for no apparent reason.

Removed our radiator yesterday and took it in for a recore this morning. There's been a previous poor repair with some filler type material which might be blocking about 20% of tubes.

On removing the radiator I discovered 2 news things about our Commer
1) It has a wind deflector but this was loose & vertical - I'm guessing these needs to be fixed at 90 degrees or so 'scoop' up more air into the engine bay.
2) Part of the choke mechanism is bolted to the radiator !

I'll see what difference the new core makes and post results.

Next steps will be to get our tune right, as I think we're running slightly lean which won't have helped our temp.

Will look at the temp sender wiring too as it doesn't look in a great state - might bypass with new wire as a test to check result.

Also after 34 years there's always the possibility the electronic temp sender / temp gauge are playing up. Unfortunately I've mislaid my infrared thermometer at the moment to test this hypothesis :(
