Could be the dizzy is worn out. I had the same problem years ago with a Commer, it would only start with a tow and then run fine but would not start on the turn of the key, changed the dizzy and problem solved, I think it was caused by worn springs or weights on the advance mechanism which should`nt have stopped it starting but it did! It could also be a break in the HT circuit wire to the dizzy from the coil or from the ignition to the coil, it would be worth running a wire direct from the battery to the coil and seeing if it starts and if not then run a wire from the coil to the dizzy. I doubt very much its going to be a major problem, it just needs going through logically. Good luck.
