Red tape is strangling this country [!] I recently applied to put a new bridge over the dyke, at the end of the field. The planners wouldn't accept the application, till I provided a flood risk assesment, which must be carried out by a qualified person.
£550+vat later, a 26 page document arrived by email. Basically in summing up, the highly qualified person stated that, "if the bridge is constructed at a level, higher than the maximum flood level, it would not cause any risk to flooding". Now why didn't I think of that :I

Thats what happens when you play things by the book! Had you just built the bridge chances are no one would have seen it or known about it but of course if you had done that and been found out your feet would`nt have touched the ground
We should take a lead from France, Spain other EU countries, the EU is where most of these laws and tripe come from, and only enforce the bits we like. There are far too many busybodies here doing non existant jobs and having to justify them by being over officious and making the lives of honest law abiding people that much harder.

The coalition govt promised to cut down on red tape but the reality is they cant because we no longer govern ourselves, we are signed up to everything EU apart from there crap currency, and what they say goes And we stand for it[:0][:0]

You have my sympathy Martin. I'm afraid the situation is getting worse, not better. This is largely due to Government trying to simplify the process and 'speed up' the planning system. First thing they did was introduce national applicatioon form which could be used anywhere. Our one page of A4 householder application form went up to about 7.
The next trick was to speed the process up by requiring all information before the application is submitted, making it quicker to determine. This means that it is largely down to admin staff to check an application against a check list, regardless of whether it is necessary or not.
You may now get a decision within 8 weeks, but it will take you 8 months to get to a valid application!
We used to pride ourselves in achieving a high level of customer satisfaction, by being helpful and helping people achieve what they want. Unfortunately, that sometimes meant that applications may take few days longer, then the Government decided to clobber us financially for being slow. We are now much quicker, but customer satisfaction is much lower.
I have campaigned since 1997 with MPs and previous ministers that what we need is not a quick decision (quick decisions tend to be refusals), but a good decision that pays due regard to common sense. I think I have been wasting my breath. [!]

i know what beachboy is saying is correct, so if we have to play by the strict eu rules, how the bloody hell do they get away with building those crap apartment blocks that look like cardboard ,in places like spain or corsica etc. this country is just far to stupid and strict on health and safety statements and method statements. thats why i tried to make a go of it with these campers, and moved away from the building and plastering side of things, because every time i went onto a large building site i had to produce a method statement to show how i was going to apply the plaster to the walls etc, and even though i might be working for the same major firm over and over again, i still had to produce one on every job. it was a right pain in the arse, because although you might be doing the same type of plastering, the materials might have been slightly different etc, and so you had to make this clear in the statements before you could commence work. but when you go on holiday and see the guys working on the sites there, they just walk round in shorts and flip flops, whilst drinking a beer as they work.[V]
