Is what I get everytime I try to start jessica. The starter cranks over very slowly even though the charger says the battery is full. How can I tell if the battey is dead? I've tried charging then leaving it for a bit to see if there is a parasitic drain somewhere but I don't seem to be able to measure any drain

and advice (as usual) gratefully apreciated!

I had this problem once and after trying everything else discovered it was the connection on the earth strap between the engine and the body.

If you run a jump lead directly to starter from batt +ve terminal and one from batt -ve to earth:
If it still cranks slow its the battery.
If it cranks fast its the wiring/terminal clamps/starter

When I was trying to start Harvey recently the starter was labouring (I was cranking a lot) as did the original engine all them years ago. The battery is housed in a box under the passenger floor and the earth from the battery to the side of the box started to smoke, I tightened it up and the starter spun like a good'un - still didn't start though:I
on the other hand you could just have a dodgy starter.

You could also try shorting across the starter solenoid terminals and see if that works, I did have an issue with the starter button failing.

put a volt meter on the battery we came home from yoxal with one conected most of the way home :D[}:)]:D

renaultvation, I've replaced the earthstrap with a meatier one (this problem has been around a little while!)so I think its worth checking again thanks.

also try the tightness of the lead to the back of the starter,usually have a brass nut and they do become loose and give sluggish starter motors.if you have to take the starter motor off run the gear up and down the shaft with your fingers.it should spin back immediately and quickly,if it doesnt try cleaning/oiling the shaft,if that doesnt work the starter motor needs reconditioning.
also is the starter solenoid working ?
 
I've had a good crack at it today. I ran a jumplead to the starter - still slow cranking, then I disconencted the earth and ran the other lead to the mounting flange (to check its not an earth problem). Still slow cranking. I went and got myself a new battery (not cheap) and the same problem [}:)] slow cranking. So I'm guessing its time for a new starter motor?! Or some new jump leads!

just a little update for you guys and gals in CommerVille.

I had a good through run through the starting system again cleaned everything up and tried again with the jumpleads to the starter motor- no joy. So as a last ditch attempt - I chucked the new battery back in, cleaned up the contacts and tighened everthing up good and tight... and vavroom! off she went!

so I was a little concerned it was fluke, and I've been out every couple of hours and she's starting first shot every time!
