Hello,

I was thinking of saving up for a VW Camper the traditional ones. Then I came across a commer on the web. I remember playing in an old one when I was very young in a farmers field. Its long rotted away by now. At the time I didn't like the shape, but since seeing them recently on the web I am in love with the style. I have a few questions which I haven't seen anywhere else on this site. I would appreciate any advise and help that this forum can provide.

1) Advise on what to pay for one eg. One that needs lots of work or a presteine one. "I don't want to be ripped off"

2) Are the VW Campers bigger inside than the commers?

3)Is there room to fit a small cooker and sink in the commers ?

4) Is it possible to get them to run on lpg ?

1) A nearly or just about on the road one costs £800 to £1500. I saw a pristine one sell for £18k a year ago
2) Yes as the engine is between the seats
3) Mine has
4) Diesel would be a better option if you are saving the pennies - you'd need to do starship miles to get the LPG investment back.

Your my 1st contact on this site so pleased to meet you! and thanks for taking the time to advise me. Daft question, but where are the engines on the commers situated ? In order for me to afford a commer I would have to sell my fiat panda. So I want a commer which can run on lpg as it will be my car replacement. "Daily Use"

If you want one for daily drive then its certainly worth spending extra pennies

Was discussing the other day and the layout makes it bigger with no engine and is it possibly slightly wider? most vans are designed to sleep across the width

1)anthing from scrap value-to a few thousand if you know how good it is..sybhil 350 & a weekend in the workshop & got mot certificate..
2)commers are bigger inside
3)you can fit an oven if you don't have one.

Saying about playing in one when you were younger reminds me of my childhood. My Grandparents owned a scrapyard and they retired in the early 80's. When we were younger we would play in all the old cars and vans, anglias, corsairs, hunters, gazelles, minxs, morris minors etc. But one memory does stand out going down there one day and they were stripping down and cutting up a couple of panel vans, a pb [:0]and austin/morris. Those were the days when it was rare in the smaller yards to cut things up, they were generally breakers yards where you went for spares.

4) Is it possible to get them to run on lpg ? - If you are looking at LPG then my (inexpert) advice would be to also look at doing an engine swap to something more efficient, and easy to convert. i don't know that much, but there are plenty of people on here who should be able to give you some advice.

I fitted an Lpg system to Dora cost about £250 including the certifcation by an LPG specilist. used a miture of new parts (change over switch with new loom and petrol shut of valve) rest of the parts from ebay.
No need for star ship milage to recoupe that :D

Used her as a daily driver through out winter (seemed happier on LPG)

Rear fitting awnings are an add on (recomend a drive away one)do a search for Dora and you will find some photo's of one on the rear)

We've also been wondering about the sleeping layouts etc? Does anyone have any pics?

The top picture of the brochure shot above shows pretty typical lay outs. Usually find the table fits between the rear bench seats and you re-arrange the cushions to form a double bed across the van. roll out bunks up in the roof are popular as well and there is also the option of a front bench seat converting into another double (if you can avoid the steering wheel). Mine is supposed to be a five berth[:0] a bit cramped me thinks.

We have a 2 year old daughter so we want to sleep the three of us on one level as shes too young to sleep in a bunk. I would think the front seats converting would help.

Sounds like the ideal solution. A camper I had a few years back had a stretcher type bunk that pulled out over the front seats - it was low enough to be safe and we still had the benefit of comfy separate front seats:)
