New owner of Ruppert

Hi. My names Scott from Chorley in Lancashire, and new to the club / forum.
I’m a plumber, have a young family, dogs, huge mortgage, the whole lot .
I have a few classics, like lambrettas and VWs, but this week I’ve bought my first Commer.
From searching the forum it appears to be a well known van in the club, Ruppert, the ‘61 FC Maidstone in green and white.
I’m going next week to pick it up from Russell in Brighton and bring it back up north.
Really excited about it to be honest, and been pouring over the chat forum since we agreed the deal to gain more knowledge.
As it’s my first Commer any help and advice in future I’d really appreciate it.
Love going shows like Tatton Park, NEC etc, and definitely be happy to get involved in the club and spread the Commer word
I see it’s a donation forum so I’d like to contribute. What’s the standard or normal contribution? Or is there club fee?
Know it’s all rubbish with the lockdown, but hope to meet some of you soon.
If things go well and we have some shows towards the end of the year I’ll definitely be out in Ruppert! 1E1E3BC3-C6AF-43C8-A87D-4546C34522CC.png

Excellent van and welcome Scott and Rupert you’re going to love it, there’s lots of information on here and a great group of people. Can’t wait to see Rupert (again) at an event in the future. Anything you need to know just ask, theres usually an answer from someone

Hi Scott and welcome to the Madhouse :)
You've got yourself one of the best out there, a cracking camper. I love the Maidstone conversion:cool:
The contributions are purely voluntary but every penny helps so give what you can, for year John, our Admin, paid everything from his own pocket so all contributions go to keeping the forum alive.

Thanks Scott - very nice to wake up to a donation email!
Warm welcome, you've defintiely got a distinctive and well-known classic in Rupert - I was tempted myself!

I was lucky enough to have a go at being Rupert's custodian for a few years. It was me who sold it to Russell, only last year - could have saved you a trip if you'd bought it then, I'm in Yorkshire! I'm really glad you've joined the forum, meaning I will be able to follow Rupert's exploits. If there's another Commerworld event at Martin's and you are there I'll make every effort to pop over and have a chat. Look after this van, it is so special - quite a responsibility, but all these lovely people here will be very glad to help in any way they can.

Hi Scott, great van and great to have another lambretta enthusiast on board. There was supposed to have been a meet this year but I'm not sure what's happening due to the obvious reasons. Hopefully we will be able to sort something out before the sun goes home.

Well picked up the Commer last week and had a good 6 hour drive back from Brighton.
Van was good as gold, but it was a hard slog, landing back in Chorley at 9pm. Not really knowing the van and it’s quirks I just wanted to get it home, but it didn’t let me down and there was worse ways to travel on a boiling hot English summers evening, windows down, sunglasses on all the way! ...had plenty of waves and beeps along the journey, but in the whole journey I didn’t overtake one thing
Since then it’s give me time to get my head around it a bit and find out more about it. I’ve had few little tootles in it, but the kids have just fallen in love with it since I got home ...but not the name Rupert! All the Rupert the Bear memorabilia in it freaked my little girl out! , and put it all in storage!.
Ive not been able to get out in it without themthough, and today as I’ve give it a massive big valet, they have helped me today to clean it.
Plans at the mo I’m looking to get a little bit of paintwork and re-trimming done to the seats, plus a bit of electrical work, like lights, radio and horn. Also considering some extra gauages like a temp gauges, just so I can keep a track on stuff while driving.
Booked in for some whitewall tyres In Staffordshire on the 11th, but sure this isn’t going to be the last of the spending on it.

Oh, I can so imagine your drive home, I just loved driving it! Sorry the Rupert stuff caused such terror - you’re lucky I’d got rid of the child-sized Rupert Bear that came with it when I acquired it!
The seat covering, though not pretty, is very hard wearing, being the same as was being used on London buses when it was put in by the owner before me.
And congratulations on managing to get the bed out - have you managed to reconfigure it into seats yet? I found the catches to secure the front bench safely, and likewise the single seat, very difficult to engage.
I so hope I come across you out and about in it sometime, meanwhile - enjoy!

Congratulations on a trouble free drive home, Glad he has come back up north, enjoy your Commer and I am sure we will meet up with Rupert again somewhere soon.

Congrats, lovely van, you quickly get used to them, a (very) loud stereo helps the journey :)

A few upgrades can help to get past the odd lorry

Great to see your family enjoying Rupert too, memories in the making :)
Legend has it that Cherry actually over took a tractor once;)
