Use a good quality 20/50 oil and all will be good

How often are you topping up with oil Panky?

Hardly any on Harvey, maybe a pint between oil changes but don't do a lot of miles. A little more on Bonnie but she leaks a bit.

Hello Trevor!! Yes that was the van and great to have got in touch and have another owner so close by!

It would be great to meet up at some point. Are you going to the classic event in the park again this September? I hadnt seen the light green one there when I spotted yours. Is there another owner in the area?

Do you have a recommendation for a mechanic who might be experienced in these Rootes engines in the local vacinity?

As per the advice I took a look at squeezing my bulbous end this weekend!

I dropped the little panel at the front as I thought that was easier than removing the front grill. The bulbous bit was quite hard and dry so I popped that off and had a feel around. I dont think it had been squeezed for a while as the pipe was quite full of gunk! I used a chopstick to try and pull it all out and have ended up leaving the end off for the remaining bits to hopefully dry off and drop out. Is there any issue with leaving that end off?

Can I also check that this is the sump plug that is removed when looking to change the oil?

Yep that's the one, and well done for finding your bulbous end Try a longer piece of material to poke right up into the heater box , or a length of curtain wire, to dislodge the debris - we wouldn't want you heater box to rust out No problem really leaving the end off the drain, you will loose a bit of blow from the heater as it flows down the pipe.
Van looks nice, I think you've found a good one

Is any particular brand of 20/50 oil recommended? I am assuming a mineral oil is that right?

Personally I use Comma 20/50 mineral in all my cars as they don't do high mileage. But Halfords Classic 20/50 is very good although over twice the price.
