New Engine Time !

Well nice mix of comments on this one !
Firstly as we all know BHP is a measurement derived form torque and as the van will be used mainly as a family tow bus for my track car and towing customers cars to and from events the 300bhp and 400nm will come in useful.
The SAAB engine that I'm Building at the moment will be built and mapped for towing and all the parts have been picked for the low end grunt and torque curve
BHP is a by product of a well built motor!!
Also as I build, modify and restore SAAB's for a living its a well trodden path for me so far I have put these motors in to a number of various vehicles a few Vauxhalls various kit cars as well as retro fitting the newer engines in to the older cars.

Sounds like you have the right plan if you are going to be doing a lot of towing. My original reason for looking for a modern engine was the same, although I had identified the vauxhall Omega as the donor car. Now i dont have anything i want to tow, i decided mot to bother with the full swap and went for the alloy head conversion.

I take it you are using the auto box from one of these? I had also decided to go for auto so as not to have to mess about with gear change mechanisms. It would be interesting to see the finished product. I will probably use the same vehicle for the TDi conversion on the minx.

Just watch what you put on the back as the tow weight limits on a commer are not very high and if your van is not based on the 2500 heavy weight van you wont be able to tow much at all even with all your bhp. VOSA will be all over it:([V]

Oh forgot to say one more thing if your towing customers cars in with it you will also have to have a tacho if your over 3.5t for hire and reward. But then you would be mega overweight on your train weight then anyway for a commer.
Just be careful;)

Fortunately I'm an old git and passed my test before 1/1/1997 so I have the 8 1/4 train licence.
As for the trailer the current law is up to 3500kg on a braked trailer plus the tow vehicle.
The hire reward bit is fine as the van is on my trade ins so can be used for "busy-ness" and as it has a Gross Vehicle Weight of less than 3500kg it doesn't need a tach.
Also when it finished and together I will be putting it on the corner weighs to work out the needed braking efficiency, while allowing for the towing.
Having said all that I have got my "class 2" 12t licence and access to a race home / transporter so if all else fails I end up with a nice Dodge that can smoke most things from the lights !:)

I doesnt matter what licence you have you can only tow what the van is capable of towing. Ive got a full licence myself and know alot about train/tow weights as its involved in my job. If you check out the new towing laws your van will prob be a touch over or close to 3.5t. Example: With the van weighing in at 2t ish + 1.5t car on trailer + trailer 500kg. I make that about 4t which will bring you under the new tacho law.;)

Now I'm confused:I I run a 3.5kg van/trailer, with a tacho. Looking at the links, I'm not sure whether I now need to have an operators licence as well[?] I only move my own vehicles, or ones I am working on for customers.... I sold my wagon because I din't want to get into operators licences [:(!]

The O licence is a grey area even with Vosa officers!
I was told by one that I do not need an O licence when towing my trailer behind my truck as long, and here`s the catch, as long as the total weight of truck, trailer and load does not exceed 3.5t......which is just about nigh on impossible as most trailers weigh about 0.8t upwards. Another Vosa man told me I did not need an O licence if I was towing my own vehicles on the trailer.
So which one was correct?
Vosa dont take prisoners so its always best to err on the side of caution, they also work 7 days a week 24 hours a day so there is`nt even a "good" time to tow and chance it :(

When you collected the Hadrian Martin you were probably breaking the law :(

If you are towing for financial gain (hire and reward) and are over 3500kg total weight including train,you now need an operators licence as fron June this year it is now in force.

If you are towing your own vehicles and are over 3500kg you need nothing not even a tacho;)[:0][:0]

Its just another money making sceme for the working man to pay more out to our lovely goverment.

Just rung the helpline and the answer was yes [V] If I carry other peoples vehicles on the trailer, I need an 'O' licence.

Alan, I was probably ok with the Hadrian, as it was my own vehicle, but could have been over the MTW + MGW for the Explorer :I

P.S. Even the VOSA site has a disclaimer saying, 'the info given may be incorrect, seek legal advice'[B)]

Simples. Just pay the owner £1 for their vehicle. Transport it then sell it back to them for £1. Keep records of these transactions. They'll still get you eventually but if when you're stopped you have a receipt having just 'bought' it they won't need to see the OL or Tacho.

So if the train weight is not displayed on the vin then you can not tow !?!

I wonder how it work when you have a vehicle plated up/down. Do they re assess all the weights?

They will ask for the green slip and can check any owners of vehicles they want as they keep the records[V]
You will prob get done for not completing the log book in then!
If you do will put an owner on everytime you do it. At the end of the day the computer knows all and says NO:D;)

How can you overplate a vehicle??
Unless you totally re register it on a "Q" plate

The V5C is not a record of ownership, it is a record of the registered keeper of the vehicle.

Well Yes ....... A good friend of mine who owns the mot centre we use has an ex RAF snub nose Chevy that he uses as a recovery/promo vehicle and has had to re-reg the truck at 4t.
He has had some issues with the tach/O licence etc
Mr M knows to whom I refer "Jof" so can back me up when I say that if there is a way around it he will find it !!!:D
