As many of you might be aware, I have recently published a paperback book 'cum' manual about all the various campervans and motorhomes built on the Commer 1500/500, PA/PB and Dodge Spacevan chassis. With regard to size, it is similar to the well known 'Olyslager' motor manuals, with a gloss cover. It is full colour throughout, and contains sections/profiles about the best selling conversions such as the Auto-Sleeper, Highwayman, Jennings ect, plus a chapter about the more rare/obscure conversions in the UK, including prototypes.
I did try, without success to get a Commer title published by one of the leading motoring publishers (of which I tried several), but they all considered the subject matter to be rather 'niche', and not profitable enough. I can understand their reasoning to a point, but I also did feel that this was a little shortsighted given some of the books which get published about very obscure vehicles. As Commer lovers, we all know that the van was in production for over 20 years, and was one of the most popular camper platforms in the UK throughout two decades.
Given my belief in this title, and the support I received about the idea from many owners, I went ahead and compiled a Commer book, going down the self-publishing route. This is a book which I firmly believe needed to be written, as a reference tool, and something which owners and enthusiasts could pull off their shelf and refer to from time to time.
It is a limited production run (given current printing costs!), and was launched at the Classic Camper Club national weekend of the 28th-30th July this year. I also advertised it on their Facebook Group page and my own personal FB page. Already well over a third of the stock has sold, so I feel vindicated at least in my belief in the project.
It will not be available in mainstream book stores or well known online book sellers. It is only available to purchase directly from me, payment via BACS. So if any commervanfan members would like to order a copy, please email me directly, and I will let you know payment details. My email is; [email protected] or if you have a Facebook account, you can find me as 'Camperfanatic Vanlife' on there, and message me.
The cost is £12 inclusive of p&p
My thanks for your time, and I do hope a few vanfan members will support this. Martin Watts
