New Carbs

Hey All,

Looking for a new carby to replace my warn out Zenith. Considering an upgrade to an SU, wondering what size SU most people upgrade to, any one ever installed twins and how to go about the manifold conversion etc....?

Also looking for either a new head or new guides, plus rings?

Any suggestions appreciated.

I, and a few others, have fitted HF44's (1 3/4") with excellent results. Aaron's (Iceman) efforts can be seen here, albeit with a different type. Commeracer has done this conversion many times and I'm sure he will be along soon to post the pics I can't find:I

Any of the late concentric float SU,s are good (HIF6, HIF44)

Hi All

I'm looking at using a pair of the HIF6/44 on my Nissan Z24 motor conversion, but they are difficult to come by here in Australia and when they do appear are very expensive. We seemed to have stopped at the HS type due to the emmission controls introduced in the mid 70's. I don't recall anything in Australia having SU's as original equipment after this date.

I have seen plenty for sale on EBay UK at the right price, but nearly always for local UK delivery only. I'm not sure why this is so, maybe someone can explain.

Yes I have the same issue, normally if you contact the seller and ask if they would post it to australia most times they are happy to for any associated costs. If you can not locate a good set of second hand ones you can also try here http://www.sucarb.co.uk/ or here http://www.sumidel.com/ both sites sell new carbs, but they are very expensive :D

Usually it's fear of the unknown! Some people can't be bothered to find out costs so don't list as sending to Aus/NZ etc. The only place I won't send to is Italy. As said just message the seller and ask if they could send to you. Worst case I'm happy to have them send to me and then I'll send it out to you, just paypal the cost back to me.
If you buy Andy's cylinder head get some carbs sent to him or me and he can send it all in one go.

usually the aus buyer does not realise it will cost so much thats from personal experience ;) so uk sellers get fed up.we sold a rare bsa tyre on ebay for a few quid but postage would have been 110 iirc buyer pulled out & george got a new toy :I

Suinnyboy keep your eyes on the USA market to! I lived over there for a while and there are a few SU's floating about, postage out of America to Australia is also a LOT cheaper and most people over there do not care about sending it O/S.

I just bought a twin SU HIF6 1 3/4 inch SU carb set off Ebay USA for $60.00, the postage to Australia was another $40 which bought my total to $100 bucks which is a LOT cheaper than I would have got over here or what I could find in the UK.

Also remember to search a few different terms, the ones I have been using are SU Carb, SU Carbs, SU Carbies, Twin SU, SU Carburettor & SU Carburetor. Believe it or not each term returns a few totally different set of SU's for sale on EBAY!!!!

Bugger, I was watching those too and planned to put in a last second bid, but forgot to wake up in time (ended about 6am our time from memory). Congratulations on the win. I have plenty of other things to do before I get to the engine so will keep looking in the meantime.

I already have 2 pairs of CD150 Strombergs in the shed from Triumph 2000's I've had over the years. According to everything I've read regarding sizing, it appears a pair of the 1.5"s will be just a bit small for the 2.4 litre motor. No twin SU/CD manifolds are made for this motor so I will be modifing the standard manifold to suit. I am expecting some space issues with my manifold as the thermostat housing is part of the manifold and right next to 1&2 inlet ports and the HIF's, which seem to be a little narrower could be a better option than the CD's.
