Zenith 341v new old stock for a commer up for grabs to the person with the biggest swiss bank a/c [:0]
There are a couple of reasons for selling it
1:we don't seem to do standard
2:Yesterday collecting parts across the country we broke down in the cortina twice.... so have to pay call out twice ouch [:0]

Hi guys, I have a spare one of these, I also had a new one fitted a few years back. Question: what carb can be easily fitted to the standard 1725 engine to improve performance, mpg...?
Cheers

This tidy setup should see you down the M5 at a 'pleasurable' speed!

Wont be long before someone on this forum will be running something as such i reckon! [}:)][}:)]

Its bound to give you trouble!..thats what you asked for though isnt it!???

Speedy spares do a weber conversion thats what ive got fitted dont really do much for performance though!! :)

mmmmmmmm...........my zenith carb has only done about 4-5k from new. Therefore, not sure if its worth changing? Need to speak to Will or Panky or someone who knows what's what?????????????

I have the Webber conversion on Chiko, I really don't think it is much better. If the float levels are set right and there is no wear in the spindle, they are quite reasonable. ;)

Twin 150CDs will improve BHP but not MPG

Thank you for the compliment but if you are expecting me to know what I am on about you'll be in for a shock [:0] My own attempt at carb conversion did squeeze a few more wheezy BHP out of a lame engine but the sub 15 mpg figures persuaded me to switch back to the Zenith pretty quick and make do with a slower, carefully driven 28mpg :I
There is only so much you can do with the standard set up, that is why so many members (me included) are considering changing to a more powerful engine with higher gearing. Less stressed engine, lower revs, better economy. Thats the theory.

crikey panky 15mpg, what carb did you fit, a 1050cfm holley 4 barrel double pumper [:0]
the trouble is the two things (power/economy) are conflicting.
you can increase power and improve economy as well, up to a point.
to get more mpg the things to do are unrestrict the exhaust, add a k&n filter, increase the compression ratio, gas flow the exhaust port to full race spec, fit electronic ignition and check tappets, all this will improve power as well.
the other things not to be overlooked are binding brakes, soft tyres, excess weight and drag, tight bearings etc.
also mechanical efficiency, fit an electric fan and loose the original.electric water pump instead of belt driven (it takes 6-8 bhp to drive it). seperate the inlet/exhaust manifolds as they bolt together and its too much heat for the inlet after about 5-7 miles.
worn distributor won,t help.
ther is some anti-friction type additives out there but be carefull, i have used ZX1 WITH GREAT SUCCESS and recommend it, but dont use slick 50 [xx(].
as for which carb to use, it probably makes little difference if the rest of the engine remains the same, if the inlet manifold flows x then it will still flow x no matter what carb is on the end.its more to do with atomisation.
has anyone ever tried an s.u on a commer [?] as the later ones are a very good carb.

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off no.3"

Twas a Stromberg of ubknown origin and a home made adapter onto the original manifold. Well I had to try :I

Thanks Guys.

Jules will twin 150CDs fit on a standard manifold? and where would I get such a carb?

I know what you mean Panky, but my van is so original, surely it would be wrong to change the engine/box/transmission? - yet anyway!

Of course I can see why you would want to keep things standard and set up right it's fine, I drove a camper as my every day vehicle for four years when the kids where kids (no such thing as people carriers then)and although a bit thirsty and slow (van not kids) it didn't break the bank. I guess I've come to the point when I would like to experiment a bit but nothing too radical, maybe just see what Old Father Rootes might have done given the inclination and funds.

Sunbeam Rapier, Hillman Hunter, and a few others I think.
