Hi all, hope someone can help as I have a 1968 commer van pb would like to know if anyone lives near Carmarthenshire Wales who could advise me if the chassis is in a condition to be restored or would need a complete new chassis? hope someone can answer

Hi and welcome to the Madhouse:)
Unfortunately complete new chassis aren't available but repair sections are from Martin Maltas. If you could post some pictures of the areas you are concerned about we could maybe offer some advise. We've seen a lot of rotten metal work and rarely is anything beyond saving so post them up and lot's have a look:)

thanks for your reply it would be all the chassis to find out which parts would be needed that's why I could do with someone to come and see her.
A few weeks ago did text Martin Maltas about my van and sent him photo's of her, not sure which bits would be needed. Went to the classic van and pick up show in Warwickshire on 5th August hoped to see him there but unfortunately Martin couldn't make it, so I spoke to two lovely men about my van.

Hi there, yes most of us have met the ginger warrior on many occasions and unfortunately he can be quite ferocious. Are you able to see the bare metal of the chassis or is it covered by a coating?

Hi, most or I should say all looks like rust, some bits screwdriver doesn't go further than it should but some bits screwdriver disappears, do you know of anyone that is near Carmarthenshire in Wales uk that has a real passion for old vehicles as I don't really want her scrapped.

Unfortunately I'm in the Midlands so I'm not sure about anyone in Wales but classic enthusiasts are all over the UK so I'm sure someone is close to hand. I would have thought that it would have to be really bad to be scrapped. The screwdriver test will definitely tell all. Keep us posted as we are all here to help one and other out and good luck.

Cant think of anyone local to you but if you post up a load of pics of the areas you are concerned about we can hopefully give you a rough idea.

Some of that looks like surface rust and could be wire brushed and treated. The main areas of concern (starting from the back) are usually the rear floor corners and box sections in that area that make up the floor support and rear spring hangers. The jacking points and floor above them, the inner sills, box section out riggers and floor above them especially where the spare wheel bracket attaches, front jacking points, inner and outer front door steps, cab floor, front inner and outer valance and the peak above the front windscreen. This is by no means an exhaustive list but the main places to check.
I would, as has been suggested by Jimmyvan, have a good poke with a screw driver where you can see rust - if it goes through or feels weak then it should be repaired by letting new repair sections in, if it feels strong and resists all attempts at trying to poke holes in it then chances are it will be OK with a wire brush and treatment.
What conversion is it, an Auto-Sleeper type or coach built like a Highwayman - or a panel van?

She is a auto sleeper sounds like she can be fixed that's good. Are you a welder ?

I do my own stuff but don't run a business doing others. Martin Maltas makes all the panels you will need, hopefully there's a classic friendly place local to you that will take it on - alternatively you could buy a mig welder and have a go yourself, there's loads of examples on here of people who have done just that.

Here's a link to Martin's website, he does everything you will need.

ok thank you

thank you for link, have thought of learning to weld but that would take too long as I wouldn't know the shape to cut the metal and that would take me forever as complete beginner in owning a commervan, but many thanks for the link.
