My new ride

Tim,

Is that really your work in progress on a Commer van or have I missed the point ? Looks great

I also find that use of rose tinted spectacles is an essential addition to Commer ownership :D

Just seen your original post Paul, a belated welcome to Commer ownership - sounds like you're a capable guy so will watch with interest !

Even a novice such as myself has made up a custom exhaust (to Panky's patented design ;)), fitted a K&N and electronic ignition. Wish I'd done this ages ago as the improvement in response and grunt is 'hooj' (as we say in Norfolk ).

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I know Swampster's Commer had the axle flipped and it does knock out quite a bit of height as you can see. I don't think any leaves were removed, but a big circle had to be cut in the floor to clear the diff. So again, a little involved/compromised (might be worth 5-linking after all [}:)])

Paul, the first pic is a moggy minor, the 2nd is a rally escort :)
however plans are afoot to do the Riley with 5 link atlas LSD axle.
and commer wise sybhil is getting a jag IRS set up, as is the Slyder :p
the very least that should be done to commers is the addition of a panhard rod to stop the axle skipping sideways (sound familiar). once i get the barn set up i will offer this as a service ;)

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

the pa has jag IRS with said rods (custom not the horrid ones from the jag) but I think this has meant an increase in height at the rear (looks nice though :)

That lowered Commer look SWEEEET! Love it!

The guy im buying it off is kindly including a brand new exhaust system but i doubt i will fit it. Im tempted to fit a y splitter in the system and have a lever/switch that operates a flap to switch between exhaust systems, 1 for an angry growl and 1 for keeping my ears from bleeding on long journeys. What size pipe do people run? Has anybody got links/photos to a system thats been made and fitted?

What is required for electronic ignition? im a diesel boy and so these old petrol engines are new to me! If its worthwhile then i shall do it.

Ahem - this is my effort at an exhaust, sorry to those who have seen it several hundred times before:I Keep trawling through the pages as it goes on a bit.

Paul Goldsmith made and fitted a similar system to his standard engine, without welding, and it sounds sweet. Another option is a Mini twin box RC40 system. Commerjules made up a system with cherry bombs and a diverter valve - very trick[8D]
There are a few of us who are trying the simonbbc electronic points off ebay, then there's the Aldon system - and Martin Maltas can supply the ultimate in electronic dizzies - very nice[^]

Thats great :) will i have to go for a side exit like yours due to the rear axle clearance? (remember im dropping the camper about 3 inches) Or can i have my exhaust come out at the back? So if i used 2 inch pipe, and an exhaust off a more modern 1.8 (i think i have a 306 1.9td box in great condition somewhere) would that do? Is the centre section there for more noise control?

1 3/4" straight through is ideal, the side exit is standard on the Commer. The two box system is definately quieter that a single but being straight through doesn't restrict it any more. If you wanted the pipe out of the back you would need to bend it over the axle - that might be a problem when you lower the van. My system is tucked up nicely and sits a bit higher than the gearbox now that I've fettled it properly.

Ah superb, i will check out how hard it is when i get it :)

Talking of which, im going to collect it tomorrow! Really excited, but alas i just realised i cant fit it into my workshop as its too tall :( going to have to convert a building nearby to my workshop to use! Not to worry

Shes home! Absolutely chuffed to bits, its not nearly as bad as i anticipated and runs like a dream :) Think itll only need a small patch underneath and thts basically it! The rest if body work....eeeeek!

Expect photos tomorrow

Have to wait til tomorrow afternoon! Im off to bed, got uni tomorrow :( Way to excitable about this thing, i love it.

Quick question though, regarding glass. Does anybody make laminated windscreens for them? I bought a spare one but i know that toughened glass isnt exactly great when it comes to stones hittting them.

Any chickens hitch a ride:)
Solid underneath - at least you've got something to weld to[^]
