My new ride

That was forever happening to me before I got my big cylinder:I but I guess I'll get caught out with that as well sometime.
Brake fiddling and wire brushing is good though:)

The trouble is, i do have a big cylinder... well relatively! At £50 a pop its not cheap, i swear this one has done bugger all welding. I have a new gauge, and the bottle hadnt been left on? I dont think im being too generous with the gas when welding either!

Crikey, refills for mine (CO2) are about £15, the only stipulation is that I get it changed at least every 5 years - before the test runs out. It's not huge, cylinder with reg is about 1 metre tall, but it holds the equivalent of about 20 disposables (£11 each) - it's enough for me:)

It may not have had as much Gas as you thought Paul? Faulty Regulator maybe? I get mine from our local pub for £9 a pop;) on me second bottle already. My doing though because i was being uber generous with the Gas before.

I have gas :I, but i have to use argon at 100 notes a bottle [V]
check all your joints and pipes, as its easy to melt a hole in one with spatter ;)

I use argon too, never used co2 before, whats it like? The bottle was definately full, i guess i just need to turn down how much gas i use

Inbetween uni work i have been pondering further on what to do about the commer exterior panels, namely the door bottoms and the lower sides. The commer came with 3 spare fluted panels...however they weren't made by wolfy it seems, 1 has the flutes in the correct spacing and the other 2 have the flutes too far apart and so would not look right

I can't really afford £170 per side (£340 for the pair) for the lowers and then another £120 to get new door lowers, so i am a little lost as to what to do :( i could use the good one to repair the door bottoms, and i have half an original lower panel left on my N/S that maybe can stay, then i can use the rest of the cut up panel to finish it off? That then leaves me with only 1 fluted section to buy from wolfy.

Alternatively i can say sod it to flutes and just have some sheet metal made up instead? But i fear that'll have a severe impact of the vans appearance and i won't ever be happy with it.

Its a tough call as i had planned on working pretty damn hard when im back to get the thing finished as much as possible with the intention of even getting an mot on the old girl this summer. My last idea was to use the new panel to then make a mould and then produce my own fibreglass panels for the sides, but i would far rather work with metal really and for the time and cost of materials, i can't imagine i would be saving a great deal.

Eurgh decisions, if only i had a proper income right now!

Argon gives a wider weld pool, while CO2 gives a narrower pool with deeper penetration :)

Comm-Pete, how much have those GRP panels cost you?

Commeracer, so would CO2 be a better gas to use on the commer? I don't mind giving it a try although i would still have to get argon for when i build stuff on the farm and i also have to pay BOC yearly anyway

Here's a price list that i found on here...It may have changed slightly since but i don't think it has?
Rear corners £50
Rear panel £50
Fluted cills £75
Lower cills £35
Door step panels £50
Front valance with flutes £90

Was a no brainer for me as i was on a budget;)
Oh and i have used nothing but Co2 on Pia...Blown a few holes with it a few times but nothing that cant be sorted;)

Those prices sound pretty reasonable! I already have 2 new rear corners, which i got for a silly price :) The lower cills, are those the ones that hang down, 1 has the clip for the spare wheel?

How are you getting on with fitting them? Are they a bit of a sod to fit and fettle with?

I work for BOC and still can't get cheap gas:I hence the CO2. I've tried Argoshield (when I could get it cheap) and while it was better I find CO2 perfectly adequate.

HA!

Whilst pottering about in my workshop, i noticed a yellow and white Commer in the corner. I had a closer look, it turned out that it was mine and i hadn't touched it for far too long!

So out came the grinder, welder and sander. The front end is lacking paint and rust now and has gained some metal, quite alot of work to do on the peak and lower valance still though but its really nice to crack on with the old thing again! Hoping to get some new panels made up soon so that i can crack on with the sides and actually achieve something.

Photos of progress tomorrow :)
