My new ride

Especially the one behind the flywheel:I

Does that mean i need to remove the flywheel in order to get to it? Or is it just a complete bugger? How do i remove the core plugs? Is it a case of stabbing them with a screwdriver, then tapping new ones in with a socket?

Flywheel is easy to get off, just four bolts. Big screwdriver and a hammer is all that's needed to get the old plugs out and as Tim says a suitable socket is ideal for putting them back in. Just don't make the same mistake I did and prize out the welsh plug that covers the end of the camshaft thinking it was a big core plug[8)]

Excellent, thanks Panky :) i shall order new core plugs, a sump gasket and a rocker gasket. Anything else you recomend whilst i am there? I am wondering whether i should get a fresh waterpump too whilst i have it in pieces? Or are they pretty much bulletproof?

Here is the offending article, and the gunk you are likely to find behind it[xx(]

And here's the other dodgy one I found along with the tool I developed for removal/relace;)

They fail as much as any, no harm in having a spare:)

Ohh that looks yummy! Gonna enjoy scraping out all of that! Thanks for the photo :)

The waterpump is the unit at the bottom of the engine yeah? Wont i need a puller or some kind to remove the fan pulley? It just looked like a sod to replace in situ so i would rather do it now than later if thats the case. Please forgive my naivity but i really do know nothing about engines haha!

No puller needed, just four bolts holding the fan onto the water pump flange.

Ordered:
Oil filter
Sump gasket
Rocker cover gasket
Core plug set
Waterpump rebuild kit (in the hope that my casing is ok, i know the pump functioned fine before)

Should come tomorrow :) Looking forward to cracking on with it

Now where can i get a replacement bolt set? An assorted pack of imperial nuts and bolts would suffice wouldn't they?

I think Martin M. has the bolt sets, but if you can source them locally why not:)

You'll have to measure the water pump bolts, not sure if the correct size is include in the set and there are probably quite a few you won't need. Is there a Websters near you, they are an engineering suppliers and stock alsorts of goodies:p

I ordered a full hose set off Martin as all of mine were cream crackered! Functioned fine whilst the engine was in there, but once i tried to remove the radiator, they just fell apart!

Most of the bolts i have are ok, its just the odds and sods really. We have a local (ish) nut and bolt place, maybe i will just swing by there and grab a few :) Not sure what the name of the place is though!

The ebay place do a smaller kit: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170-PIECE-5-16th-UNF-NUT-BOLT-AND-WASHER-KIT-/150661869545?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item231425afe9 which is temptingly priced...

Well Martin, Speedies, and that bolt supplier all delivered very quickly to me! Tomorrow i shall get on with unbuilding, cleaning, painting and rebuilding the engine!

Some more gaskets, thermostat and a new waterpump (my one had a hole, dead bearings and a cracked impeller) on their way to me... also need to collect some of that metal filler weld stuff to repair my thermostsat housing! £120 for the thermostat casings new, craaaaazzzzy expensive! So hopefully i can restore what i have got now.

Subframe is now painted! Hopefully start building that up tomorrow, which will be a good feeling:) will be nice to see at least one thing going back together haha!

Engine is mostly red (although looks pretty patchy and rubbish haha), freshly painted black sump fitted with new gaskets and a general clean is making it look 100x better than it did! I think the red has added 20bhp easily.

Core plugs fitted, no thick gunk behind! Was really impressed, just a teeny bit of skank that some radiator flushing will sort out :)

Decided it was about time to do the final strip down on my old toledo that i have had sitting about so that i can scrap it along with some other stuff (saab 9k and mk3 golf estate) to raise some commer funds, so thats donating a few parts potentially such as the fans (may be a little too deep though, i don't know how much room i will have)

Tomorrow i hope to finally get stuck into rebuilding underneath the commer and getting familiar with my welder again! I have 1 more week until i go back to uni, so i really do want all the underside front completed and reassembled before i return...pretty big effort for somebody who can hardly walk right now, as well as doing it with just me, some jacks and my engine crane...yay
