My Humber Super Merc

Sorry to sound thick but whats the bit of added propshaft for ?
Is it just because the auto is shorter/further forward than the old box or is it for another reason ?

It looks like its going to whip up nicely having both a uj and, what looks like, a rubber donut with no centre support surely its going to flap and vibrate very badly...........

Or have I been at the paint thinners to much and missed something obvious !?

Thats got me thinking now Mark [:0] I have not thought of that any one else got an opinion on this please. The reason I needed the prop extending was the box is further forward then the original one.

Just get a bit of scaffold tube and weld that in to the right length. :)

Failing that, take the prop and the humber flange to a prop shaft place and get them to make a single prop to the right length. It's only a bit of steel tube

That was exactly what i first thought.
Would be better to lengthen the prop and just make an adaptor flange :)

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

I wasn't sure if you where going to add a baring to support it or if you had replaced the rubber with steel or something !!

You MUST change it before you try to drive it as your best case scenario would be a vibration worst prop shaft eats floor then its self then destroys everything in its way as it flails around whilst you try to pull over !!

Best bet is to give reco-prop a call and have one made you might even be able to ring them with the length and ends !!

Also something to think about on your propshaft is the slip joint if memory serves the Merc has a 2 pice shaft with the slip jpint in the middle after the centre baring ...........

With would mean that both ends of the prop would be fixed .........

For those who are wondering what the problem with that is. As the rear axle moves up and down the distance between the gear box flange and the axle flange changes .....
If there is no slip joint then the change can not be accounted for and the uj's get crushed.

Now having said that this all depends on type of suspension and amount of movement incurred etc

I've come up with an easier solution for the battery Bernie. Use a flat battery :D

:p Mark the original propshaft is still being used and has a slip joint in the middle.

I have now taken out the doughnut joint from the gear box and connected the prop stright to the gear box, not the perfect solution but it will get the car moving.

Once the car is running I will have a new half prop made :D

Nice one Bernie
That should sort it !
As you've got the slip joint maybe a steel "doughnut" would work for you ?

Keep up the good work :)

Hi Tim

I will extend the Humbers prop shaft but I don,t want to do this until I am sure every thing fits and works ok. I am leaving the option of putting the original Engine & box back in if necessary :D:D

Fuel pump fitted and plumbed up just need a connection for the tank :p

Spent this afternoon playing with the wiring, the fuel pump relay is not getting a feed from the ECU so the pump will not run.
Thinking now that the ECU has lost its memory and may need reprogramming [:(!]

A Humber with amnesia:I Not surprising really, it's got an identity crisis;)

Summer's Coming

It won't have lost its memory bernie. This model merc is to old for all that. Is this model fitted with a chip in the key and a transponder on the ign barrel?? As if you don't use the chip on the Humber key it will stay immobilised. Just a thought?? You can tape the key to the transponder under the dash if you want to use original Humber key?? Is the diagnostic plug on this a big round one??as its def pre eobd.

Has this merc got the red and green led at the bottom of the rear view mirror?? Also when you take the passenger floor carpet out is there a control modual mounted towards the bulk head?

It imobilises off the drivers door lock when you open and lock it from the remote. If you can get to the modual under the passenger carpet there are two wires you can bridge out to by pass the system. Its been that long since ive done any of these i cant remember the colour of the wires. I will see if ive got it wrote down somewhere but dont bank on it;) Im sure if you do a search on the net you will find someone who has done it as these systems were very problamatic

Jon are the wires are Green & White which come from the ECU to the module, I have jointed these together with no joy. Is it possible that it needs either a resistor or diode just thought of this one so not tried this.
