my friends old commer camper..

Hi everyone,

I've joined here because I'm trying to help a friend dispose of his father-in-law's old Commer Camper.

I believe the family bought this new in '71 and used it for summer holidays and weekends away, every year for about 25 years, when they moved from Enfield to Waltham Abbey. This was the last time (till today) that i saw it. Back then it was in very tidy condition for it's age and was well maintained and roadworthy. It was driven here and parked up, and then for various reasons has remained unused ever since, and has slowly decayed.

The father-in-law is now an elderly widower and is moving with my friend and his family down to cornwall, and the van needs to go soon to facilitate the sale of the house.

As can be seen it's in a bit of a state. The body is rotten, among other things the right hand side skin has detached from the frame, as has the bottom of the door skin. The peak of the roof over the windscreen has also rotted away. The tyres are completely flat and likely perished, though the suspension still bounces freely.

I don't know if the van is worth saving or even if it is possible to save it, however it is 100% complete and original, so at the very least it should be a mine for parts and trim, everything is there from the pop up roof and hammocks, to the chrome parts and lights. It seems a shame to just scrap it, but if we can't find anyone to take it that's probably what will happen to it, and all those parts will be lost.

If you're interested, please send me a PM, and feel free to comment here, we don't know the first thing about Comma vans so anything will be helpful.

Thanks.

Oh that's such a shame:( it's a Haylett Olympian conversion I think. Hopefully someone will find a use for at least some of it.
Many thanks for posting on here.

But is it worth saving? Are the parts worth saving? Is there a demand for all the bits of trim and chrome? Or is it not worth the effort of taking it apart, should we just scrap it?

To be honest it does look beyond economical repair but everything has a value. If no one comes forward to take it off your hands, and you have the time a space, then I'd strip everything saveable off. Bumpers, pop top, glass, handles, grille and that nice little reversing spot lamp would be all be of interest up I'm sure. Commer prices are on the up so there will be more and more vans being put back on the road and they will need parts to get there, it all depends if you are willing to wait for the buyers to arrive.

Although the bodywork looks beyond redemption, I am sure that there is much which can be saved to keep others on the road. The chrome bumpers and grill, together with much of the interior. Even the front panel below the windscreen looks to be sound.

Be interested in some parts of this as I also have a Olympian. Be interested in interior if it can be saved, poptop sky light, badges, hammocks and other bits too.

I've got a haylett Olympian, it's a shame to see another one in such a poor condition. What's the interior like?

The interior is all there, but i can't see much as it's been used as a store. One of the long side windows is broken so it's probably a bit damp!

CLICK followed by a whooshing sound as the Commer Dyson is switched on to max;)

Gavin would love to know what you would let it go for as I would be interested in trying to come and fetch it. Only problem is I don't have a trailer or a car with a tow bar so I would have to hire something and as I'm in the Midlands I dread to think of the cost but saying that I would love to try to convert mine to a pop top ( even though the hole on my roof would be to large so some serious fabrication will be necessary) saying that it might be worth the gamble. Hate the thought of it being crushed
