Hi. I'm looking to buy a classic camper and a commer is my preference. Does anyone know what sort of mpg you can get out of a manual transmission 1725cc and the automatic 1998cc? And what's it like to own one? Any pro's or con's? Everytime i find one, by the time i get in touch with the owners, they've been sold! Thanks, Matt

I am no good at engines and all the tech stuff... i just know that owning one of these vans is the best thing we ever did...
I think all the pros out weigh the cons by miles

I have claimed to get 30 mpg from my van - but that was on a very careful run up the motorway. There are things you can do to improve things (if thats your bag)
Modification wise, there are changes to the air filter and exhaust that improve things no end. You can get some larger wheels which gear things down a bit. Some conversions are more eficient than others, for example most van based conversions are more aerodynamic than the coachbuilt models. Finally fitting an overdrive gearbox helps lolts (effectivly a 5th gear).
If you have any other questions just ask - there is always someone who knows (or can find out for you)

Have no idea how an automatic fares - imagine it would be worse but such rare beasties that haven't heard any reports yet.[8)]

on our last long run out we somehow got 30mpg - don't ask us how but we worked it out several times and came up with the same answer. amazingly we did even better on the way home - but then we were on the back of a tow truck:I
all aside i love our van he's great and i have never regretted buying him, we are going away for 2 weeks this weekend, 2 adults, child and dog - lets hope i feel the same afterwards

I managed a shade over 30 on a strict economy run along good A roads in my first van. The engine was a sweet as a nut without any mods - but I was the most careful driver you have ever seen and never went above 40 mph. Normal around town I got low 20's and 25/28 on longer runs.

Hi all. Can't believe so many of you replied, in such a short time. Thanks for all the info. I have been looking at others vans as well but think you may have convinced me a commer is the way to go.
Might have to increase the budget and have a bit of patience but with any luck i'll pick one up soon. Will let you know how it goes. Cheers, Matt
