MOT and Tax exception...

So this year my van is 40 years old...woohoo happy 40th and all that :)

It’s showing on log book as first registered 1st June 1979 so the question is do I need to wait until then for it to be except and register is on a v112 or is it based on the year itself, I’ve seen conflicting articles out there. Would be a pain waiting till then so guess I could get the actual build date from the Rootes archives if needs be but rather not have to.

Understand about it being kept safe etc. I do all work myself so confident I have that covered and know much more than the average MOT person.

Thanks

Jim

Found this for tax on gov site:

‘Vehicles made before 1st Jan 1979 are exempt from 1st April 2019’

But then this article from and classic and sportscar webpage April 2018:

Cars first registered before 20 Feb 1979 no longer need an MoT under new regs. It’s also rolling so if your car was first register 1st June 1979 you won’t need an MOT from 1june this year and so on’

It seems odd but I’m thinking maybe that although the article is 2018 they may have coding in the page to update the date automatically each year, guess would make sense

It's the build date that matters. If you can get proof that it was built before 1st Jan then it will be tax and MOT exempt, I think you will need to change the taxation class to Historic Vehicle and pretty sure you will get a refund if you have taxed it earlier in the year.

Thanks panky, put a request to the Rootes archive to see if can get anything. I’ll hope they left it lying around a few months :)

I had to declare the v8 as mot exempt when doing the tax funny old palava because of the modifications but worked out ok.

I have done it for old bikes and I think you might have to wait until Jan 2020 unless you can show build date during 1978....
and you thought Gov could just screw up Brexit.....

Yes Baz as the conversion was or could have been done 30 yrs ago or something to that effect using parts that were available hope that makes sense it did at the time....still went for MOT as I don’t agree with not having it done.

Still hovering about. New job and lack of time has curtailed my exploits somewhat! Waiting for someone to organise a Commer meet so my Peugeot can meet some more of his ancestors!
Interesting about the engine conversion. Some may interpret that as a 'substantial change' as it is so different to the original set up. Did the DVLA examine the vehicle or just ask for details of the changes?

It was while doing the tax it made me tick boxes & answer questions didnt have time to think about it. Didnt realise thats what it was for.
No looking at vehicle as yet.
Ah new job you say....i am off today & satfor work trial...
See you sometime in the distant future guys!

Thanks so it’s yearly or bi yearly rather than by the month, appears to be built jan/Feb 1979 so would’ve possibly missed it anyhow
