Miss Piggy Resto

Sorry to hear about the problems with the Morris, it's always the things that aren't too hard to fix that happen at the most inconvenient times. Sounded like a great show. Worked up there in the 80's on jobs at Banora Point and Tweed Heads. I remember sitting in the car at the beach at Coolangatta listening to the Live-Aid Concerts while watching a Surf Carnival on the beach. Passed though the area about 10 years ago, so many changes, had to really think where I was going, was sad when I saw a closed Magic Mountain, probably apartments now.

Not much progress at my end, have had other things that took priority. Will post some updates on my thread soon.

Have you had a chance to have a better look at that Humber diff? I have referenced it on the Dodge Supervista thread. Didn't want to hi-jack the thread so move back here to try and resolve what that diff is. Some of this we have covered before, but for the benifate of late comers I have re-covered my tracks

Thanks Panky and Martin for your posts at Dodge Supervista's thread, continuing the saga from here. The information you have given looks like proof that the diff Miss Piggy has is something unusual. I have attached the picture from the diff on ebay that Panky posted and marked what my issues are. In the red you can clearly see the planetary gear in the diff centre, with the other blue circle showing where the shaft that holds the pinion gears is located. None of this is present on Miss Piggys Diff.

I posted a picture earlier in this thread that shows two Datsun diffs, the one on the left a std open type diff and the one on the right being a LSD.

Miss Piggy's diff centre looks nothing like the ebay Humber diff and of the two Datsun diffs in my picture it far better resembles the right hand LSD version. The idea of a Humber fitted with a LSD sounds hard to believe, but living in a country where it was common to fit Holden 6 cylinder motors in a Commer years ago, it wouldn't surprise me.

I would imagine that the Humber was assembled locally in Adelaide from CKD kits and wouldn't be surprised it the diff was sourced locally from the Chrysler/Valiant production line to keep weight and import freight costs down on the Humber. The Valiant Pacers of the day had a LSD option and wonder if one of those has somehow found its way into Miss Piggy's Diff. We would need someone familiar with Australian Humber production to clarify this.

Cheers all
Stephen

I did try the humber center in the commer housing and the bolt holes lined up and both axles have 19 splines, both diff housings were the same except the spring mounts commer on top and humber on the bottom,
and as i said before the brake drums are different size.
It's got me buggered why mine is different from Martins, both the centers are at a mates place at the moment but i'll try and get any numbers that might be on them in the next couple of days if that helps to identify it

If you turn a wheel and the opposite wheel turns in the same direction, then it's a LSD.
If you turn a wheel and the opposite wheel goes in the OPPOSITE direction, then it's not a LSD ;)

Here is a photo of the commer diff center numbers
I think they read; 980704 J, 1980874
From memory they were the same on the humber

Hi guys been busy lately but have found time to do a bit,
Bought some new parts- front wheel bearing and seals a standard holden item, outer axle bearing which is a closed in type (photos coming soon as my phone camera is on the fritz)new front shocks from Enhanced 4x4 suspension 36-5535 which is a direct fit just had to fit a larger diameter bolt, radiator is in being recored, new brake lines, remote booster ordered, master cylinder rekitted, wheel cylinders and shoes re-shod, decided to not to down the disc route, time and money restraints.
The chassis finally finished, i grinded, washed, blew out all the dirt from inside the chassis rails, 2 coats of hand brushed bitumin rust proofing then sprayed fish oil through out all the chassis rails and in between panels, then sprayed killrust etch primer and lastly coated that in white body paint, i gotta say i'm glad that big job is over and it looks great.
Had the springs resprung and refitted into position, the front end has been removed, cleaned, painted and refitted.
Still waiting to hear news about my diff center he's dragging the chain a bit.

I just need a good rootes...

Thanks for the support guys, i haven't totally given up on the o/d idea just more combing the web
for info.
Tonight i refitted the steering gear and front end.
Q; what gap should be in the lower and upper links and the control arm,in the knuckle itself, i seem to have about
4mm on one side and tight on the other so the rubber seal on one side is loose?
I,ll try and get a photo of it tomorrow.

yes i fitted new big o - rings, on the castled nut side there is no thread in the lower arm
so it pulls up tight but the other side is threaded so when screwed in it finds it's own thread
and opens the gap, i'm thinking both sides should be tight.
I may have to pull it apart again and clamp the two arms together and then try screwing them in?
Picked up my new front cylinders, rear rebonded shoes and brake lines today lots of up and coming
hours of fun on my back and under the van.

A bit of an update, run some new brake lines through out, made up some rear top shocky mounts and welded 16mm bolts to the diff for the bottom of the shocks, cut a hole in the passenger side floor and fitted a battery box, made new splash panels to go behind the master cylinder and battery box, refitted the sway bar, and assembled the front brakes.
Still haven't much luck with the gearbox but its coming along slowly

Hi guys,
Been a while since the last update, since then i've
finished fitting up all the brakes and the power
booster,i'm really happy with it, got back the diff
center from getting redone it's now 1:4.55 instead
of 1:5.56 and refitted it to the springs, made myself
a new towbar not quite finished just got to attach
the tongue.
I have started to dismantle the engine taken the head
and sump off but it's looking to complicated for me
to tackle so it's off to the engine rebuilders to do
it right the first time (hopefully).
Once that is done i can then install the engine, gearbox and wheels and finally take it off the jack stands yee haa.
