I may have a solution to the problem of a 3 point seat belt for the middle front seat. In the mini-buses where Cazz works all the seats are removable and some of them have their very own sealt belt built into them. the inertia is built into the bottom of the seat and the belt goes up the inside of the seat and comes out of the top of the seat by ones shoulder. On the other side of the seat there is a stalk built into the side of the seat.
I reckon if I was to cut the frame away from underneath, I would be able to mount the seat on the engine cover in place of the original seat. now I'm aware that it would only be as safe as how well the engine lid is secured but my doubting question is this!..........how would it fare at the MOT station?

it might have to go through one of those inspections that kit cars have to go through when first being accepted as road vehicles - not sure what its called

Why not fit a lap belt using the existing stalk mounts for the two sections?

My personal opinion is that lap belts are more dangerous than no belt at all......but my main reason is we need a 3 point belt so Olivers seat can be strapped in properly and it won't be long before he just has a booster seat.....at the moment Cazz sits in the middle which makes things a little cramped

The engine cover would not be strong enough, it's not meant to be load bearing and you would have to weld it in for it to be even close to take the force an occupied seat would put on it in a collision. Personally I wouldn't consider it.

i remember the good old days - when I was 8 or 9, travelling in my uncles cortina from Dublin to Wexford - my seat was a cushion on the handbrake - my means of restraint = having one arm out holding the ashtray

Trying to work out how to get a couple of 3 point seatbelts in the back of mine at the moment. Glampervans hire have a Commer Autosleeper with them fitted but really well hidden on the pics, can't see a thing. Bit too steep to hire it for a weekend break to find out, though it does have a coffee machine :). Not anyone on here is it?

if you are going for seatbelts let us know and we can weld some reinforcing plates and anchor points in whilst its at this stage
far easier to do things like this now
 
Defo please Rich, probably right best before paint. Going to be building an Autosleeperish configuration from some plans I'm hoping to get hold of so the area would be around where the benches fold up into forward faces I guess. Cheers
