It appears that we have a new 'exclusive' club, so exclusive that there is only 1 member? What am I rambling on about now?

Well, I recently noticed that by my name was the caption 'new member', thinking this was some sort of glitch, I ignored it. However, on looking thru' the members list, it appears I am the only member! Everyone else (all 167 of you and by the way ,I am encouraged that we have had over 30 new 'members' in the last 2 months) are all starting members?

Whats all that about John? (admin) [8D]
 
You better chat it up a bit and see what the next level is! ;)

I'll have to pull away from the Imps this summer and get on witht he commer, then I'll break into "New member status" :D
 
It is all to do with the number of posts; when you set-up the forum you can give the different levels different names; not feeling in a witty mood I didnt change them from the defaults. Happy to take suggestions in this thread :)

You will also notice you have a star... ooooooo!

We can change the labels as well as the qualifying posts!

Hi to all out there in Commer land i am a new member and have recently become the latest in a long line of custodians of the beautiful Maise which i managed to buy from the equally lovely Helena and her daughter retaining the vans name but of course, having driven her from Nottingham to Portsmouth and she was very well mannered, i have decided to seriously look into transplanting a 'new' engine and gear box, i have read on the forum of various types that are being or have been considered and transplanted, i was wondering whether there were any pictures and or blow by blow accounts of the process also how have members managed to cut down on noise in the cabin etc..... i have an mx5 and the site for these lovely cars is full of photographic 'how tos' change or modify things i will en devour to try to also include photos of any work that is undertaken o Maise as and when...i should add i also restore spitfire's and midgets.......that'll be both triumph and MG as opposed to the human variety... please any info would be really welcome ...regards Tony G.
 
Welcome to the Madhouse Tony! If you trawl through some of the Readers Cars threads you should find some info on engine swaps. Failing that someone will probably pop along and give you some pointers. PUP PPU.

Give the old girl a chance before you start ripping the old 1725 lump out - it's served Maisey well for the last four decades so it can't all be bad. An SU conversion with a decent exhaust will trasform the performance to levels of almost briskness and hills can be driven up rather than dreaded. As for the sound deadening some good thick carpet will make a difference and if you can stretch to an overdrive the drop in revs is most welcome. I think I've done about everything that can be done to make things more peaceful in the cab and have managed to quieten things down significantly by fitting an electric fan but who's to say sticking a modern engine in would make it any quieter, they all go suck bang blow when it comes down to it:I

Wow, that's some first drive! It's a great start for you and masie.....no recovery truck, not many comers manage that! There is several engine swaps done, from a vauxhaul red top to a Rover V8 with various others in between. As Panky says, an overdrive gearbox, and an RC40 is a great start.

If you have a 1098 or 1275 midget engine/box up for grabs let me know as I'm on the look out :I

Darn it Chris, I had almost wiped it from my memory! Although Fonty was recently driven from Coventry to Brighton with the very same engine. And only lost all her water when she was parked up in Brighton, so I am told!!

So Tony, a Pinto swap has been done too. Originally a 1.6 which was ok and to be honest reliable if not sluggish - especially with an Autobox. We swapped it for a 2.0l which did show some promise but ultimately the engine was a bit of a dog and we just had overheating issues constantly.

We sold her recently and brought an Austin A35 for which the midget engine would come in use for.....I best start a non commer Readers Ride now :p

Dear all sorry for the delay in reply, i feel amongst friends already, and great advice. sorry i dont have a a midget engine but will keep an eye out we currently own thee spitfires my 14 yr old has a 1500 my 17 yr old a mk1 shes a beauty and thier mum has a mk4 whilst my 18 yr old has a midget mine is an mx5 Panky could you say which su and what about twin carbs like the idea about overdrive but again what am i looking for alsois a brake servo easy to fit i know i can buy a kit on the spares website anyone done this......i should add my sons are classic car freaks and my middle son a great and competent mechanic...so nice not to be alone with a commer,....we owned a CA before which a 'friend' kindly offered to restore, and then crushed without telling me ....nothing of the sort will happen to maise she will become the property of my Sons.........ONE DAY....... Captain chaos.
 
An 1 3/4" HF44, off a 1275 mini, is the one you want.Commeracer made me a manifold to mate one to my Rapier engine but the standard iron manifold can be modified to take one too - bit of surgery involved though. You will need and alloy headed engine to make the twin Stombergs fit, unless there is a suitable manifold out there for the iron headed engine.

As Panky says HIF44 is the best option. Twin carbs is not worth the hassle, there is very little to be gained from them as most manifolds are so poorly designed. Much better torque and economy with the S.U :)
There are a few vans with remote servo,s, a very worthwhile addition [^]
