HI ALL,
I'm looking for a good mechanic in west London that can look over my Commer Highwayman for an engine tune and an MOT. Does anyone know of one?? Urgently needed please!!!

Tell that the guy with the Sunbeam Imp sent you.
He's firm but fair without being petty.
Give the brakes a good exercising on the way over as they tend to go out of balance with gentle use.
 
@ Baazteer - Peggy broke down 3 miles from the MOT centre. Fuel filter apparently was completely jammed. Needed changing. There are a few other niggles which are in the process of being sorted. The MOT looks to be a pass. Coolant had a leaky pipe and engine needs a general.
Thank you for the recommendation. Its worked out beautifully. I get Peggy back next week Wednesday so fingers crossed there are no more issues coming in.

A few niggles is good, shows they've had a good look over - here's looking forward to your new business taking off :D

I had the same problem with my fuel filter, took it off and gave it a good clean, so far so good.:)
 
Glad it went sort of OK.
I take all my cars there and have done almost exclusively for 20 years. The son of the original guy does the MoTs now.
I'll be taking my daily in next month.
 
Daily passed the MoT yesterday. Had a look at Peggy and saw the contents of the fuel filter. Snakeskin galore!

From the description it sounds like there may be more snakeskin in the fuel lines, my advice would be to replace the whole fuel line.
 
@bazzateer: Great news on Daily passing the MoT. Piggy passed his MoT too but seems to be failing on other levels.
Several issues coming to light now:
1. The fuel tank needs cleaning or changing for that matter. Solution: to clean it and then air blow out the fuel line to clean it.
2. The fuel pump seems to be affected: Need a new "electrical" fuel pump. Mechanical fuel pump wont work as it was replaced byprevious owner.
3. Piggy starts up fine when in a cool state but stalls out when the car heats up.
Gum stating that Piggy needs a Commer specialist to look at him. Do you know of anyone that can help with diagnosing and fixing this boy.
Its 9 months since I got him and I've driven him twice. Got to be some record here.
 
Like Baz said it's the dreaded 'snakeskin' :eek:
The lining on the inside of the tank breaks down into flecks and shards the plays havoc with the fuel system, blocking everything up:( The only real solution is to replace the tank but you could get lucky with a good swill out and a fitting a fuel fiter. The mechanical pump is probably OK but totally blocked with snakeskin:(
Tim 'Commeracer' makes lovely aluminium tanks that are about 20% bigger than standard, fit one and no more blockage worries - ever:cool:
 
All are you experts out there stand ready to correct me if I'm wrong, but I had A problem stalling when the engine was hot so I posted on here a couple of years ago I was told the fuel line runs across the front of the engine and the heat maybe evaporating some of the fuel, so I wrapped a fair bit of insulation tape around the pipe where it was touching and never had a problem again, it was a £1.50 fix ;)

As for fuel tank well worth replacing, I did mine a few years ago now with new pump..
Never looked back.. :)
But definitely try the tape i was shocked when it worked..
 
When I had Peggy I re-routed the fuel line to avoid the hot bits. If there's still snakeskin in the tank it could be partially blocking the outlet. This would allow enough fuel to get through for tickover and light running but as soon as load increases it would cut out. The mechanic said the pump ticks loudly occasionally, this suggests it's not getting enough fuel, again pointing to a blocked outlet from the tank.
He started her up and she ran nicely straight from cold with no choke. This suggests the cash is set too rich which will also affect general running.

If she was still mine I'd replace the fuel line first. Give the tank a thourough clean out or get a new one from Tim. Have carb set up properly (it's a new carb since I had her).

I'd also do away with points and condensor and drop in an electronic dizzy from Accuspark (about 70 quid).

A little more investment but should result in a reliable performer. As it's for a business you should be able to write off the costs?

@bazzateer - Agreed...all the work I am getting done is expensable against the business which I haven't even gotten going yet!!! HAHAHA!! Fingers crossed and god willing it will all go well.

What do you mean when you say - ' the cash is set too rich'? I am a newbie here so its all on the learning curve for me...

Actions to be taken:
1. I will be swapping the petrol tank out,
2. New filter needed (the 3rd)
3. Am replacing the fuel line completely
4. Am replacing the fuel pump...need an electronic one to replace the one that is there currently...likely will get the Accuspark product (if it fits)
5. As per your suggestion am replacing the points and condenser with the electronic dizzy from Accuspark.

In the end of course...when it really comes down to it and of course when I have the money (if I ever do) I would like to replace this engine with either a hybrid or an electric engine.
 
Hi Sid, I think Baz meant the carb is running too rich (he's got cash on the brain;))
Just looked at the Accuspark fuel pump on Ebay. The one I looked at isn't suitable as it's a high pressure one and would be too much for the carb without fitting a pressure regulator. Best option is to look at the solid state low pressure pumps - Facet is a good one to choose.
