lpg

Hi all hope the meet went well sorry we couldn't come.
Was thinking I'd love to get my commer converted to lpg wondered if any one knows anyone who can do this or even advice on doing it ?

There is someone on here who has done this, but can't remember who. I am sure one of the wise elders of the forum will be along before too long to point you in the right direction!

The only issue with LPG is that if you are paying out a good price you may not do the mileage to recoup the cost in an occasional use vehicle

i gave up on recouping investment on my commer a while back.. just fell in love with it.
I work in the environmental game so would be more comfy knowing she's not chucking out too many nasties.
I realise it may not be financially the best move but want to see what's feasible and for how much.. i heard that it may cost around 700 for the kit.. but not sure if i could fit it.
I've seen a few tanks come up on ebay for less than that but dont know the ins and outs of second hand kit like this. I'll hceck out the last posts though. thanks

Just driving a classic car; not scrapping it and buying a new one that produced loads of pollution just being built is my idea of being green! The throwaway, replace every 5 minutes with something greener society, has a lot to answer for in my eyes. [}:)];)

oops didn't mean to ruffle.
completely agree with you. life span is everything. Just would like to see how possible it is to have her converted. I was putting lead replacement in initially but stopped that now.
I also live in london where it would help.[|)]

Amen to that, Adam! I think this is the main environmental point which so many people don't even seem to think about.

And - for the record - this is not me trying to justify that I'm working for General Motors, but rather that my regular transport is a '96 Cinquecento Sporting (or, actually mostly the bus or a city bike) and also helping to keep old Commers (half-)alive. :D

The Chamba's not ruffled! [8D] I just don't want you to feel too down on yourself about driving an old inefficient vehicle! I'd consider LPG, as long as it was a very cheap install and would get me my money back, being the tightwad that I am.

Danrigs

I have a LPG Commer and its great a cheap to run, as you can see from the thread topic it can be fitted quite cheap and whos bothered about the cost when you have a brill Commer especially when you are going to keep it for years like i am .

Happy LPGing ;)

Hi

I can confirm I have red recently it is less damaging to the environment to keep an old vehicle than to replace with more efficient versions repeatedly. The guy from "Scrapheap challenge" was the author, its not easy being green the title. LPG is very cheap though, greener to fit on the everyday car possibly, depending on the annual milage, etc.

Good Luck, would be interested to know your findings, Andy

Thanks for all the comments all. Will keep her on the road whatever and let you know how i get on with the LPG idea

Go LPG, its pretty easy to do - especially on a carb engine. You can pick up a carb kit for very little these days. Just make sure you use new pipe and olives for the little cost that they are. Torpedo tanks underneath on each side are the way to go. Someone should make the chassis outriggers with a half moon to suit with a strap already in place - now that would be good. Mine hang a little low (the tanks that is!!). I've got two underslung and one under the rear seat. The 2.8 V6 does about 18-20 miles to the gallon at legal limit speed crusing. LPG likes a bigger engine as you do loose a little power. If you convert without changing the valves in the head to hardened seats - use a Flashlube kit to drip feed valve lube into the engine whilst using gas. I've now converted 7 vehicles - modern and old and none of my insurance companies have asked for a certificate!!!
