lowering

hello was speaking to will and dave at tewks and they have removed leaves at rear, some do the bounce and some do height so ask someone in the know which to remove, and the front they did just chop the coil down but will have to do it small bit at a time to set required height and so that still under slight tension when wheel off ground cos it will fail mot if spring is loose when jacked up off floor hope this goes some way to help

Cool thats interesting thanks for the info.. will look into finding more info from ann expert. but if anyone else has anymore info, thanks

hi all, lowering the commers pretty straight forward, but it has a downside when lowering the front??. i lowered mine about 5" to start with, looked great but had to raise it again 2", i kept scraping the front due to the overhang. another prob i had, well still have is the front beam sits very low to the ground, about 4" off and sometimes grounds out on country lanes, big bumps etc?? if you look underneath theres four clamps that hold your front lower swing arms on, these are what hit the ground, not good??? ive welded extra support to mine just in case one did break? i hope i havent put anyone off lowering there van just thought i,d point out the safety issue, these are old vans?:D

hi davejones, what did you need to do to lower the commer the 5inches? could you run me through the steps how, thanks :)

hi rolamad, if you lower it 5" it will virtually be sitting on the bump stops? mite be abit bouncey? to drop it the 5" you,d have to cut the spring down quite alot, i think the springs were loose after i did this though so an mot pass after this mod is a no? i got my hands on some 2500 springs for mine as there a bit more stiffer than 1500,s and just cut a coil off or two cant remember exact? you could always get a spare pair for the mot?, or there are a few companys who will make you a pair of springs or re,temper them to suit, insted of just attacking them with an angle grinder? dont no about the cost though??:)

Can I ask a stupid question please[?][)][)] I'm having a bit of a blonde moment here wondering why on earth you would want to lower your Commer.[:0] Whats the benefit[?] Or is it purely cosmetic:I:I

hi debs, better handling, less body roll? oh and of course the main reason better mpg, less wind resistance? ha ha yeah right!!:D:D

well, cutting own coil springs does work, but its not the right way to do it as you end up losing the flattened end coil and leave a very small area of spring in contact with the platform, this concentrates stress and causes side loadings on the spring. the right way is buy or have made springs the length you want, they are not expensive.would also be worth uprating the poundage as well(std ones are 650lb i think).
as for the rear, the options are,
convert to adjustable coil-overs (easily adjustable ride height)
fit a parabolic single leaf off something else
take some leaves out the commer spring
put the commer spring under the axle.:)

Here's a couple of pages from the manual that might help.
