Lola not starting - no ignition

Thats good but I doubt you have sorted the problem The starter will turn ok off the car because its not trying to turn 1725cc of iron. The fact that the engine was turning slowly was a sure sign the starter was on its way out and sadly it will fail again probably when its least convenient 
Sorry to sound all gloom and doom but it would be best to sort it out properly before you get stuck at the side of the road.

Good advice Beachboy and I'm happy to accept it. I think I'll go see this refurb guy about it and hopefully get it sorted. Sounds like I might need to get to know him sooner or later, based on how rubbish these motor factors are![!]

Cheers Jon, but there's no way I'd ever consider driving Lola without breakdown cover and chances are that any number of things are about to go pop that I'm entirely oblivious to. Given that it's almost impossible to get a new starter motor here and that I don't know for sure whether the starter motor was the problem to begin with, I shall motor on! I'll be getting my existing starter motor reconditioned just in case! Cheers for all the advice!

One of the possibilities is that the Electrical connection was poor and by removing it you inadvertantly cleaned the contacts? A 30 yr old van will have a fair bit of voltage drop around its system that with a simple clean of connectors and fittings will improve lots of slight electrical problems.
