LNJ 892E ?

Hi All,
My first posting as I just discovered this Forum.
My wife and I purchased this Commer in early 1973, had the engine and gearbox fully overhauled and interior redone by ourselves and then toured around UK but the big adventure was when we went by ferry from Newcastle to Bergen, then toured all over Europe, returning to UK late 1973. We returned to Australia in Dec 1973 and due to the strikes at the time were unable to sell it. My UNcle sold it for us in 1974 at a much reduced price and I would dearly love to know if it still survives.

Oh, further to first post, the van resided in Hertford at 111 Ware Rd, and I have checked with Directgov and looks like last licensed 01 Oct 1981 and listed as unlicensed.
At the moment I have a Tax disc from June 73 in front of me and I paid 9 pound and 15P for 4 months

Hopefully this is a pic of me working on the van at my uncles place in Bengeo

I wish that hadn't changed lol :D

Welcome to the forum Peter... 1981 is quite along time ago since it had been last licensed :(

but you never know :)

Cazz...Is smiling again, as Smurf is on the mend!!!!

Hi Peter and welcome to the Madhouse - actually you sound quite sensible as you've already checked up with the DVLA:I
I love the pic of you working on the van - if only they all where in that condition now :)
Just because it hasn't been taxed for a while doesn't mean it is defunct - maybe in a dusty barn somewhere waiting to be re-discovered[^]

Hi Cazz and Harvey,
many thanks for the replies.
Regarding the pic, I think I had a lot more hair in those days [8D]
One of the things we loved about the Commer was the table over the engine. My wife used to nip over it while on the road and make a cuppa and we would partake of tea whilst cruising. You could also lay out an OS map to navigate (long before GPS's were invented)
We really wanted to bring it back to Oz with us but the cost was prohibitive and I have only ever seen one Commer in Oz in the last 36 years.

Peter ;)

welcome along Peter :)
you probably haven,t seen many over there because Phantomrose has them all, about 9 i think ;)

"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

Little bit off topic :I but this is our OZ combination. A Ford Territory (2005) and 17ft Jayco Poptop van at Lake Eyre in South Australia in July this year.

I know it won't help find the old girl but I found another pic of her. It looks like we were holidaying in a wreckers yard [8D]

Great to see some lovely old pictures of her :D Thank you

I hope she is in someones shed waiting to be rediscovered

Cazz...Just wants Smurf to pass her MOT now!!!!!

You can write to the DVLA and request the details. You must have a valid reason for requesting it. The last time I did it, they charged £6.00. ;)

I did it for mine and simply said it is an historic and increasingly rare vehicle for which the history would be useful

Download form V888 from the DVLA website, fill it in, and send it off with your cheque for (I think) £5,

Spare a Commer Guv?
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

According to the DVLA website that last tax disc ran out in 1981 but it's not shown as scrapped. Could still be out there somewhere?

That's £88.85 or £266.55 PA in new money though

Peter-Good to see your pictures-hope she turns up. Ive just located 4 of my Fathers early tax discs for Clarabel OYA592L (1972) -He bought her in 1979 disc 1 31.7.79 too faded to read disc 2 30. 11. 79. 4 months £18.50 disc 3 31.10.81 6 months £38.50 disc 4 30.11.82 6 months £44.00 - a bit of inflation even in those days. Ps I have some very fond memories of the Newcastle -Bergen Line having crossed many times in the early 70's to climb in the Jottenheim Mountains- the boat was nicknamed 'the Vommiting Venus' prior to having stabalisers fitted. The tables even had raisable edges to stop the food flying off in storms- happy times. Hazels Dad.
