Hi there,
Having had the new brake light switch fail in a short time I am wondering if the stop lights/ high level brake lights and trailer lights are overloading the switch so I am thinking of fitting LED's. In some of my catalogues it is stated that their LED's are for off road use only. Talking to someone at the Classic Car show at the NEC they said that it is legal to use LED's on pre 1986 vehicles after this it becomes more complicated. My van is a 1972 so I should be OK. Does anybody have any experience of fitting LED's to our Commers. If it is legal it sounds like a good idea.

UK rules state for vehicles after April 1


1986 (and no it’s not an April Fool !!!!) it

is illegal to use LEDs unless they were

originally fitted to that vehicle (hence modern

vehicles are ok). However, to make

things more complicated (and why

shouldn’t the Government do such a thing

!!), there are several other cut off dates relating

to specific items ie:-

For front side lights it is Jan 1st 1972

For Rear Side lights it is Jan 1st 1974

For Brake Lamps it is Feb 1st 1974

Note LEDs should NOT BE USED FOR

REAR FOG LAMPS at all
 
Thanks for that Panky, more food for thought, perhaps I will leave things as they are and see how long this brake switch lasts.
Any idea why LEDs shouldn't be used for rear fogs.

Probably because there no tests have been carried out to prove they are OK:confused:
 
Been using leds on my '72 Imp for years now, only the headlights are normal bulbs. No issues at MoT test time, no issues in use. They're better than standard, brighter, on and off must faster and they draw less current so less strain on the chargoing system.

You can even get headlamp ones now.
 
On a similar topic...I upgraded my front lights from sealed beams. Now when I have full beam on the wiring gets a bit warm around the switch, is that normal as pulling more current, are there better bulbs to stop it or looking at a bit or re-wiring you think? Cheers
 
Halogens actually draw slightly less power than the old sealed beams, I think there's a problem with the switch:eek:
