leaking oil

I have noticed oil leaking from the hose that runs between the tappet cover and the air filter. It has a circular piece of plastic that houses a metal gauze. This was chocka full of oil and was then leaking onto inlet manifold. Could anyone tell me what could be causing this- i know is probably a simple problem but can't quite figure so calling on your expertise commer van fans! Cheers.:D:D:D

This is the crankcase breather, any excess vapour from the engine is fed into the air filter to be burnt up by the combustion.
If you get excessive pressure and vapour, this pushes oil out as well, caused by worn bores and rings [xx(]
Simple solution, which most of us do, re-route the pipe into a chassis leg, lubricates the chassis :I
Keep an eye on the oil consumption and do a compression test on the engine ;)

Thanks:D makes a lot of sense. was trying to remember how my old commer was set up. thought this may have been the case as i know there was always a lot of oil on the cross member. will do a compression test tomorrow. do you know what it should roughly be sitting at[?]

We keep a record of our 6-monthly compression tests, same meter, all 4 spark plugs out, cranking speed.
Readings vary over time but in the range 150-120 psi. generally.
Had a rogue 100[}:)] on No.1 cylinder, that recovered to 130 next time[^]
Clearly, tappet clearance is important:D

More importatnt for the 4 cylinders to be within about 10% of each other within that 120-150psi range. If one is massively different you could have issues.

Peggy can do 78mph!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Yeh all of the above what people are saying, or or or just turn the radio up hehehehehehehe[)][)] sorry not helping much.:I:D

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labottomy!
