Am I right in thinking that when you fill the gearbox up with oil it also fills the O/D box? I'm on the verge of getting the van back on the road the road and the O/D does'nt seem to work, I have'nt gone through all the likely causes yet but I seem to recall low oil level will stop the box working.

Any thoughts on this appreciated.
 
Solenoid is often at fault. See if it clicks when operating. If no click then its not operating (the plunger is not plunging) so its a wiring or solenoid fault. The wiring breaks down quickly as it is exposed to excessive heat so its worth shielding withe propriety heat shielding stuff.

yep, the o/d and g/box share the same oil :) and as jules says, check the solenoid first ;)

they fill through the same hole but have seperate drain plugs!

What have you done to test the overdrive?

its best to check over the wiring to the solenoid (i.e. that it is live when the switch is flicked). If its not working, check the solenoid itself, and the 1st 2nd lockout switch (I presume you're testing it with it in 3rd or 4th?)

the solenoid should make a satisfying thunk when it fires off (its quite quiet when it goes on)

as far as I know overdrives themselves tend to work "a bit" when they are failing (i.e. they go on then go off unexpectedly)

I Did a bit of fault finding this afternoon, the wiring seems ok, I put the van in third and with the ignition off connected the + terminal on the solenoid directly to the + on the battery with a lengh of wire, the solenoid clicks but there is no "thunk" when the current is switched off, can these things stick? I'm thinkig a little tapping with a rubber hammer here.
