knocking it on the head

mmm where do i start?. as most of you all know i have been a member on this forum for quite a while and was one of the earlier members to join. when i first started coming on here and bought my first ever commer van there wasnt that many members in the club and parts were very few and far between to come by,everone else in the club was also struggling to obtain any panel work for their vans and also mechanicle parts. i got fed up with trying to look for stuff on ebay back then as it was hopeless to be fair, as there just wasnt much about at all.thats when i decided that enough was enough and decided to go into trying to recreate as many of the panels needed to try and restore my own van. after making the first few panels the phone started ringing, with calls from fellow members asking if it would be possible to make some panels for thier vans also, hey hey i thought there might just be a market here for re producing stuff on a bigger scale, and so i went about setting up coventry commer panels, the place where people could come and get the bits that they needed. the first couple of years were great with steady little orders coming in on fairly regular bases, and things looked quite promising, i had to invest quite alot of time and money into having jigs and castings made up to try and improve on the panels as much as i possibly could, so that there would be very little complaint with the goods etc, this drained me really of quite a bit of money, as every thime i wanted to get something re produced i had to fork out for the first few items to be made myself, and had to have many panels knocked up in batches of ten etc, which can be quite costly seeing as there are many panels to try and re produce.anyway after the first year or so of selling panels i then got asked to not only supply the panels to someone but to also have a go at restoring the van or them at the same time, that was when basses van was born, the first out of my work shop, which i also had to build up at great expence at the same time in order to undertake the work. two years have passed me by now and it all seems like a big blur really as i have work on around fifteen vans in total, many of which have been brought back to their former glory by having full on restorations undertaken on them, i wont list the vans as most of you have seen them on here anyway, as i have posted up many pictures of them as we went along the way. i have had a great time in trying to restore the vans for people and hope that the good points in my work far out weigh the bad times and comments that have been mentioned on here over a couple of topics of just recent times.im not going to lie about it to people, and would rather come out with it and try to explain myself to clean the air a bit amongst us, sometimes i have been a bit of a fool to myself by dragging jobs on for a bit to long, some times this was purely my fault with bad decisions made along the way , and other times it was because of the situation that we are all in now, with this awful recession, and the constant struggle we are all facing with things like cash flow etc. during this last year i also have had a few horrible things done to me with regards deals that have been made with fellow members , which have left me with a dent in my own pocket and scares after they had done the dirty on me, but im not going to go into all of that now as its water under the bridge as far as im concerned. anyway back to what i was trying to say, i have enjoyed the last couple of years doing all this stuff and hope that everyone else has enjoyed the results that i have achived, and feel like they have had value for money, but due to a lack of orders for parts recently, now that the supply chain has grown, and the recent drop in offers of work on peoples vans, which i think has come from a combination of all the things mentioned above, i have decided to call it a day for a while,as its just to much hassle and a struggle all the time trying to keep every thing and everyone happy. and so i have decided that from this day forwards im going to finish off the last couple of vans in my workshop over the next few months or so,and try to turn out a cracking last couple of vans before i sign off and take a big back seat for a while, and let others take over where i have left off. i will still keep my workshop open as i would be a fool to close it all up completely, as i have invested alot of money into it, and i will still be working on the odd commer van here and there, along with a few other projects that i have up my sleve, but unfortunatly they will no longer be on other peoples vans, and will be my own, as i intend to restore a few vans for myself to try and sell on once they have been completed, as this way i cant upset anyone with restoration completion times etc. hopefully things will turn out ok for me and feel that this is the path way that i want to try and go down for a while, nothing ventured nothing gained as they say!. and so the end has arrived, i would like to say one or two more things before i sign off, and thats a big thank you to everyone who has used my panel services and restoration services over the last three years, i really valued your custom, and i hope you all valued mine, i would like to thank admin john for helping out with the web site etc, and also to my old mate panky for posting up pictures for me on a regular bases. and to anyone else who has been a good friend or fan. i would also like to wish martin maltas all the best over the next few years with his business and web site, and his efforts at sorting parts out for everyone else, to help keep their pride and joys on the roads. i hope to see you all soon and will try and organise one last big meet at my place later this year some time, and i will always still be around on the forum as a fellow member, enjoying all the gossip as usual. so many thanks once again ,lol from the woolfman.[:X];):p:(

Well Woolfy let me be the first to wish you all the best and every success with whatever new venture you take on. Wish you would stay and if we wernt so ar away would defo get stuff and things from you! Hope you keep working on commers even if just for friends and yourself. I am sure with your skill you will be in demand.
Lets not forget that its been your work with getting panals etc made up in the begining that has saved many a commer from the dreaded scrap pile and i hope many more yet.

Well...alright then, maybe just a little...

All the best Martin, hope you change your mind. What's all this about a last meet? No reason why it can't stay as a regular end of season bash!

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

A sad day and I know you've deliberated over this decision for a long time, but I would love you to reconsider - again. There's always a fine line between a successful venture and a noble one that struggles to pay it's way, if there were thousands instead of a few hundred Commers left you would be looking for a bigger workshop to cope with demand. It's certainly not your fault it's come to this but purely supply and demand (and by the sound of it a few unscrupulous characters[V])
You will always have a loyal following, and rightly so, the work you've produced is top notch and I suspect people will still come knocking on your door in the hope you'll make an exception for them. I'm glad to hear you'll be keeping the workshop on and the facilities will still be there for the day CCP2 opens it's doors.
Good luck for your new relaxed future, how will you cope without all the pressure;)

:( a real shame but all the best in whatever projects you take on! Looking forward to seeing that maidstone make an appearance too ;)
good luck mate

woolfy i know we have had our differences[B)] but i genuinely wish you the very best of luck in your new venture;) its a tough old world out there at the moment and a lot of people are struggling:( anyhow thats another story:I i cannot see as you have already the facilities in place why you should stop making/supplying the panels[?] at the end of the day its some extra wedge:) i do hope you keep us alll updated with the maidstone[8D] and once again big man i wish you every success for the future;)

why thanks guys for your kind comments,,like i said i do love working on the vans as its been a big part of my life now, but the way things have been just lately with the knock backs etc, i feel that the damage has been done and that the time is right for me to sit back for a while. i would rather come on here as a fellow friend and be able to turn up at meets as an equal, rather than here things being said about me etc. i have given ccp my best shot over the last three years with the little funds that i had to start it up with, but it seems that this just isnt enough.i was going to go out with a big bang and add a load of pictures to this posting of all the vans that have passed through the workshop, one of which would show the before picture and another showing the after restoration result, but unfortuatly i dont know how to upload the pics, and my mrs deleted some of the earlier pictures from my computer due to too many pictures stored.like i said i will be finishing off thelast few vans in the workshop over the coming few months, so i wont be leaving quite yet, and will still work on the vans of my own.:p;)

Good luck with what ever you do next Woolfy :) as bout the Maidstone if when you have restored her back to her original state and were possible thinking of selling her please please email me first:I as I will be married by then and making more money with my new venture hopefully and I know that I would pay your asking price with no fear:D
I hope you can de stress and enjoy the break I'm sure your your be getting sneaky direct emails from 1 or all us asking for 1 or a million things from you:I :D:I

Woolfy. You have all the right skills but are operating in the wrong market. You need to take everything you have developed an apply it to a much more popular, abundant make of vehicle who's name I dare not mention on here. Time to become Darth Woolf..... :) I don't think you'll struggle with work then.

Cheers

Andy

A sad day indeed, but maybe Andy has something, it would take the stress away of where the next job is coming from and make Commers more of a novelty/joy to work with? ...Ahh, well only you know what is best for you mate and who knows, by the time you finish the couple of vans you have left to do, you may have a change of heart....I wish you the best whatever you do mate[8D]

I do agree with Baz, why does it have to be the last meet? It's always one of the best there is:D[8D]

hi mate i have given it some thought, but there are already many good firms out there already doing them, in my area alone i know of three firms doing them and they are all good friends of mine, some of them have even decided to start doing other vehicles as themselves, one of the guys i know ,whos name is reg has started doing a couple of tims favourites, the austin j4 s . he has a lovely old post office van in his unit at the moment. i will take a picture of it tomorrow and show ya. lovely old bus it is. i wouldnt mind having a go at restoring an old bedford ca, as they look fairly simple with easy to replicate panels.[?]mmm who knows whats gonna happen.:D

th_HPIM1509.jpg

Big Bad Woolf

why not look into the panelwork a bit more fella? bedford panels are hard to get. and as for mk1 transit's my m8 had one and had to get rid as he couldnt find a single panel after over a year of looking. could be worth considering, of coarse if you go that way you will have to keep making commer panels to lol maybe 'coventry commer panels' should become 'coventry classic panels' the more variety you can make the more demand there will be m8

I have the perfect 'employment opportunity' for you Mr Woolf. I seem to remember a pic of yourself as the Incredible Hulk. So we beef you up a little bit more, prefect the scary growl and we send you out to kids parties and basically you scare the s**t out of them for top dollar. For an additional fee the parents of any *troublesome* child can request some 'hulk coaching'. Its a threat, but done in the hulks own special way using his big fists warm hearted personality ;).

Strippergrams are so yesterday, the Incredible Hulk is the future (Especially when he drives a custom 'angry green' PB) [}:)]

And this little beauty is one of the vans Woolfy will be working on in his 'retirement':p
