Hi ;)
Ive just taken Betty's engine out today to make her as oil tight as she can be as im pissed off with her leaking all over my nice drive.
Whilst i have her engine in the garage i had a thought,what about painting the engine in the original blue/light green colour ? any one out there have any idea where i might get the engine paint from and what colour i need ?
secondly im making the engine nice and oil tight ive looked at the front and rear mains,as they did in the 70's there is the cork screw type oil flinger, anyone know how i seal the mains now ive taken then off ( maybe a small sealant some where ?) i dont want to bung up the oil way so it backs up.
Another thing any one out there have a dip stick tube that doesnt have a crack in it as mine has ?? and any one know where i might get a oil pressure switch from as i cant see one on the speedy spares list ??

Hi BM, sorry don't know about paint or pressure switch but the bearing caps need to be sealed when the sump goes back on. In the gasket kit there are cork strips that push into grooves in the bearing caps - apply some instant gasket (I used Locktite)in the grooves and a generous blob in the corners where the cork strip meets the block - while you are at it smear the rest of the gasket with it too. Sunbeamsam did a conversion on the timing chain cover and fitted a conventional oil seal, it involved turning and welding a carrier onto the cover but it looked a neat job.

Hi There
I have a dalmation driveway too so I'd be really interested in any info you have on leakproofing the engine. Please take as many piccies as possible! I replaced the sump gasket and cork seals at the end of the sump, but I'm guessing the oil is coming from the front end where I can't get to with the engine in place

As for the paint. I used some blue hammerite on my gearbox which is remarkably similar to the colour of the engine. I'm not sure about it's heat/ oil proof-ness. Other than that frost might have something

no it was in January/Febuary when I was building and fitting the overdrive box. It was fine while it was below zero - just wrapped up warm and got on with it. When it melted it was horrible!

I'm sure you have far worse!

Yes, I'm afraid so. And I that cannot stand the cold...!

And now that we had a daughter in July (out first child) my girlfriend is already excited about the winter ahead of us (which I am so definitely not!) and saying "It would be so nice taking her out on a skiing trip in one of these pulka/pulk-thingys. I think we should get one!".
Ouch! I've managed to stay indoors in front of the fire for years now, but now I'm in trouble!

ha! I know what you mean! Can't take babies out in the cold - they need to be kept in the house - infront of the fire for example...

[8D]Been sorting the head out on the engine today replaced the exhaust valves as they were well worn due to Betty running on LPG (should be ok for years now) replaced all the core plugs exept the one at the back of the head as when i got a core plug kit from Speedys it didnt include the big one in the head!! shall be calling them tomorrow and see if they have forgot to put it in the bag?:(
waiting for a nice blue engine paint in the morning to get cracking on the paint, bought a new timing chain and tensioner as well as a full engine gasket set and seals for the gearbox when i get it out to paint and make that as oil tight as possible. when i stripped the timing chain off the tensioner was in half when i took the cover off !! that will be the timing chain rattle on idle then.
will keep you all upto date when i do more stuff and get some photos at the end to show you all how loverly she looks !!

i had that when i did our plugs, i sourced mine locally in the end just so i could get on with it as speedys broke for holiday, have you done the two behind the gearbox[?][}:)]
 
two behind the gearbox [?][?]?? only saw one that had been leaking for years !! will have a good look tomorrow as you said the big one is the camshaft one .;)
Took the gearbox out today replaced both oilseals,took the selector unit off the top and resealed the gasket and both blanks on the side.Painted the gearbox case black and pressure washed the bellhousing and gave it a good clean.
Hope after all this it stops leaking oil !!
will keep you all up dated when i get more done

I hope there is only one other - I dropped the box and only did one core plug (and the camshaft welsh plug[8)])

which gearbox seals did you do? the front and rear ones? How does the front one come out?!

I replaced the rear(propshaft seal) and the front input seal this one with the aide of a screwdriver just pulled out it was alot easier with the bell housing off though.:D
hope all this is worth it in the end ?

:)hi

Yes i totally stripped it and replaced all seals and gaskets,replaced valves and decoked head, had probs with the sump gasket though the cork strips were a real pain in he a*se ! I take my hat off to you lot out there that have changed these in situ. luckily the crank and big ends were fine,the bores etc just glaze busted other than that great (shes only done 73k anyway).
although it seems that ive done it quickly i work strainge shifts as a police officer so have days off in the week,being in the motor trade as a mechanic for 18 years before going to the "dark side " helps a bit ;)so ive put lots of hours in and hopefully it will be ok when it goes back in.
Will post some pictures when i put the engine back in after cleaning and painting the bay :D
