Just got back from Derbyshire, where I had been attending the Imp Club National. Jog was well loaded with parts to sell on the way up, and after a brisk couple of day's trading, he came back much lighter - and emptier. I only managed approx 19 mpg on the way up, and 26 on the way back - though It is downhill on the way home.
I also now have my 240v element installed in my dometic fridge, and made some nice ice cubes overnight the other day. Ideally I'd also like to run it off 12v, and use an inverter for this purpose as there is no where for a 12v element to be installed. I am not going to use the gas, as the fridge is rather old, and don't fancy leaving the van with the gas on, not to mention the carbon monoxide issues as I don't want to install a larger vent on the side of the van. So, would I be able to run a 240v inverter to power a 125W element. The other possibility would be to remove all the gas fittings, and fit a 12v element in the tube that the gas flame would usually fit in? Sound like an idea?

That looks interesting, Jon. I have been offered an inverter that will convert 12 volts to 240, so will try that and see how much current it draws. I have a 110 amp hour leisure battery, so that should cover any periods when the van is idle and it's not hooked up. The back of my fridge is the same type as Panky, and I haven't seen a way of getting the should surrounding where the metal elements go off.
On a plus point I forgot to mention, I now have a repaired awning, and it's been repaired well, and stood up to a couple of heavy downpours, though it could do with a re waterproofing.

I had the same problem and found that the drive in the OD box was slightly smaller than the cable square end. I did a bit of adjusting and squashed re-profiled the end of the cable with a small hammer and block of steel. It looks a bit of a mess but it did the trick

On mine there's a small plate with a couple of self-tappers holding it to the shroud. With that off what seems like a bin bag full of insulation can be pulled out to reveal the pipe inside, tacked to the side of the pipe is a piece of tube where an element fits (don't think there's room for two in there). The element should be in close contact to the pipe so I don't think bunging it up the gas flue would be very efficient - best way is to attach it to the side of the pipe with jubilee clips as Jon has done.
I did have to put a little nick in the side of the shroud for the bend on the element to exit.

Regarding the fridges element, mine is the same as yours, and I know there isn't room for another element, I am not going to connect the gas up, so I will try using an inverter to power the 240 volt element. It's rated at 125w and the inverter can power up to 150w. I will use my clamp meter to measure the current draw, and hope it will be under 15 amps.
On the speedo cable, I will need to get a new cable, as the current one is toast. So, there is no difference in the cables for the od and non od? I guess I will have to find out from mr M this weekend.

No problem to use the original cable but you may have to re route it as it will be a bit on the short side. I ran mine under the engine over the front cross member and it works a treat. You need to remember that with od on the speedo will be a bit out of whack as the gearing ratio will be different. Can't say I noticed the difference and I just use a gps to keep an eye on the speed. Feel a slight sense of achievement if I get a speeding ticket in a commer anyway! (not that I ever have of course!)

Been thinking back and I seem to remember that I had to get the fitting on the od changed to fit the cable. Not sure what they did as I got a mates garage to do it for me. It involved using a lathe though. It could have been I had the wrong fitting on the od but don't know. I do know the original fitting from the gearbox came back in a bag of assorted bits.

Been to collect the refurbished NOS mirrors I bought on Ebay. They powder coater did a great job as usual. Click on the link to my blog to see the before and after. I am aware that the near side mirror is probably for a coach built van, but it's miles better than what was there before, kind of hanging on. All I need now is to find a stem and standard mirror for that side too, like the driver's side, and I can have a matching pair!

Also disassembled a D Type overdrive today. Before wrecking anything important, I operated on a Triumph unit I have that is for spares. Quite an easy thing to do actually. Now I feel more confident about repairing the OD that Colin sold me should the unit that I have not work once installed in its place. The good news is the spares unit has a very good condition cone clutch. All helped by the link I found for a manual on a volvo P1800 website.

In case any of you were wondering how my trip to the Alps is going, well, we didn't go in the end. Due to creative differences with my now former partner in crime, the trip has been postponed. However, I do have a plan up my sleeve for going to Istanbul next summer.
In the mean time, Jog is waiting for his new curtains to be made. I have sourced some horrible period flowery material to be made into curtains, and just managed to obtain some sheets and pillow cases in the same material for use in the bedding department. Excellent! Once they have been made by my sister, I will post some pictures.
