J type or A type???

Hi all, been out of the game for a little while due to lack of funds but things are moving again and will be getting into the resto much more over the next few weeks. The motor has just been droped off for overhaul. New bearings, timing chain, head skim, new valves and hardend seats for unleaded and so on.
I have the chance of an overdrive at a more or less realistic price but it is an A type ( off a triumph) my question is will this go on the commer gearbox in the same way as the J type? Has anyone got an A type that they can tell me about?
The 'rustbucket radar' has been on high alert over the last while so some pix to follow...

A commer down under - or down under a commer?

hello
I have seen J types and D types fitted to Commer PBs, not an A type - it doesn't mean it can't be done.

The overdrive has an internal oilpump which is driven by a special cam on the end of the primary gearbox shaft. You need to have this shaft and I'm not sure its the same for all types of overdrive.

If it does fit, the only things to worry about are the gear change linkage, the mount and the propshaft.

If the bellhousing is the same length as the non overdrive box, the gearlinkage will take care of itself. The bellhousing (and input shaft) can be swapped over if necessary (you have to be brave enough to dismantle your gearbox!)

The propshaft will have to be shortened and you need to make sure that the splines on your propshaft fit on to the splines inside the end of the overdrive.

This might be useful

Hope this helps

Hey thanks for that, I wont be getting the a type then! The odd J type does show up over here but they are few and far between and cost a small fortune.

Cheers
