Is this normal?

Hi All,

I took my stock as a rock commer for a test drive for the first time on the weekend. I have only ever driven a chev V8 commer with lowered springs and protech shocks so I haven't got anything to compare it with.

I have performed the hilux shock upgrade and the tyres were pumped up enough. The springs are stock standard.

It bounced around all over the shop. Especially at the front. Just wondering if that is what they all do or my roads/van are just shit.

Cheers

Damo

They do tend to be a little bouncy and feel worse because your sitting over the springs. But saying that I fitted a set of new old stock dampers a couple of years ago and it rides very well.
Filling the Armsrong damper at the back with SAE 50 works wonders too

It's killed any erotic fan fiction I have been writing about raising the height.

I'm looking at a diff swap in the near future so I may just lower the whole thing again in an effort to stave off sea sickness.

First time I went over a speed bump - at a very sedate 15km, I think I got in 3 solid, all 4 off the ground bounces.

I did wonder at all the bungee cords the seller included.

I love the ride of my van and it sits on what appears to be all original style fittings. I consider myself extremely lucky to be one of the people who can actually say that they own such a fantastic classic. Saying that I personally don't like or want a modern style van. I grew up bouncing about in commers so I guess I'm used to it but isn't all their idiosyncrasies the whole point of owning one?

I grew up going on holiday and travelled in a post bus regularly. I thought it was great going up all the farm roads more off the seats than on. Bought my post bus and love it. To get my pickup to go well you have to drive it like you stole it.:):):)

Ours isn't particularly bouncy. It's the only one I've driven or been in (or even seen up close) but it seems pretty solid on the ground. All original suspension setup.

What tyre / tyre pressure are you running ? Ours are 195/70 R 15 C (commercial van tyres).
Pressure is I think around 40 psi, although I haven't checked it lately. I'm thinking this may even be a bit high.
It was set by the tyre fitting company as that's 'about right for van and tyre size'.

i'm running 60psi in the front and 50 at the back i think.

I've got adjustable shock up front which i've turned up to stop the front bounce, back is still pretty bouncy - been meaning to try Panky's idea on swapping the oil

I haven't checked the tyre pressures but good idea. It still has old cross plies on it.

I am getting some 195/15C tyres tomorrow so I'll see if that makes a difference. I can't imagine it's all tyres.

Good fun but feels dangerous at high speeds. My V8 had the engine mid mounted and felt fine at any speed.

Hmm, I was surprised at how good ours is at 60 or so. Holds a straight line nicely. Not great around corners but then I'm not expecting it to be I guess. It's not too bad though.
Sounds like maybe something is up - the tyres might account for poor handling.

If old tyres tyres the walls could be shot, if the strength has gone in them you'll get a more bouncy ride

Turns out you're spot on. I pissed off the old cross plys and put on some radials. Much better ride. The brakes need adjusting as they were pretty shit and I cannot recall a more gutless engine in my life but it handled pretty well. I have a 3.9 P5 diff to stick in it when I get a chance but I doubt it has the power to run it!

It was a lot of fun to ride. That's the main thing.

Where did you get the adjustable shocks from
