Insurance

That's a great result - but undervalued:I
What would a new Commer cost at todays prices - cos that's what it is[^]

And relax

I like Sureterm & Footman James. I dont know if their premiums are competitive but we do a lot of classic accident jig & repair work and they dont generally muck their customers around over a claim too much (unlike some companies)

Cheers

I've been with Footman James for a while. Last year for the VW and Commer with a combined limited mileage of 3k was £215. My renewal came through the other week and the premium has jumped up to £320 which is >50% increase! Calling them didn't yield any results so I called Peter James as recommended by Baz. I'll now be getting a policy through them which matches my existing but with unlimited mileage for £195. Result!!

Obviously I comment on how good they are at paying out, but I can't knock the price of that policy. I doubt it's even worth me phoning around other companies to be honest.

PJ uses the exact same underwriters as FJ I believe. The only difference appears to be the price. PJ is a small company with relatively small overheads. FJ is now part of an american owned global empire with, presumably, massive overheads.

I tried PJ for my three cars when the Mini was due - they quoted me more than I'm already paying for the three separate policies[V]

I am glad i've managed to find an insurance company, Adrian flux about the only people who will insure a 17 year old on a commer, it'll cost me £1200 but thats no more than the average car insurance would cost, possibly less.

That surprises me John. I've got all four of mine fully insured for under £100.

Result with the insurance Will[8D]

I know Baz, I was expecting a lot less but out of my three one car is my everyday Focus and the other is a '91 Mini I think pre'90 is their limit for classic insurance [V] Maybe next year.

Summer's Coming....

Ah, that probably explains it then. My daily is a '98 Vectra which is insured separately. '91 isn't really a classic in my book, even if the design is!

I can still get the Mini on a classic insurance - just costs a bit more than your deal:I But as you say how many other cars of that age would be considered 'classic'

I was told by pf spares insurance co they can insure any car 10 yrs or older on a classic policy.

just had quote from peter james for 1989 transit autosleeper 2.5 ltr diesel(still got my eye out for a commer but for now this came up at bargain and easy resto for the summer, just wheel arches and a little cosmetics),as classic £178 for unlimited miles and uk & europe breakdown cover, fully comp(will try RH insurance tommorrow).i asked about salvage retention and they said,if in the event of an accident they would only allow option for me to buy back if it was catergory C or D only,is this the norm? and thanks all for the pointers, mark.

This is Hazels dad here with an update on Clarabels insurance -this is a cautionary tale of two contrasting insurers-with a very good outcome! Barry Grainger originally insured C through Highway with an acceptable agreed value in Sept. Following good feedback from NEC I asked for an increase in valuation in Feb supported by a full thread of photos. Following receipt of valuation forms, their response was to halve the valuation leaving us underinsured. Admins club valuation was sent to the underwriters with no result. 3 months of hassle- dozens of phone calls-with comments like (they dont like campers! It would be ok if it was a VW!) Yesterday morning one short phone call to Peter James www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk 0121506 6040 led to instant agreed value & unlimited mileage and recovery. They love Commers and our website! -they viewed the evidence on line, accepted Admins valuation on line and I had a policy e-mailed within ten minutes.(they only require some photo downloads and receipts)Outstanding service and an excellent 'peace of mind' outcome with an acceptably higher cost. They would welcome other busines! PS Hazel, Dad , Matt and Thomas are taking Clarabel to a Drive in at the National Memorial Arboretum on Sat. Ist outing with all the jobs done - thanks Martin!

Glad to hear PJ served you well, I've been singing their praises for a few years now. I've got all four of my classics insured with them.
