Idoits guide to mixture setup please?

Hi guys, Can anyone help with a tuning issue, Took our baby for a long run out for the weekend (at last)and I although she never missed a beat I think she is running a bit rich. A friend followed behind me for a while and commented on a smell of petrol which you can also smell when shes ticking over. She has the weber carb with a K&N filter. Part of mes thinking "if it ain't broke do't fix it" But I don't wanna do any long term damage or waste petrol...any Ideas please? There are no fuel leaks by the way.

If its running rich there will be black smoke from the exhaust. and it will start from cold ok without much choke, and probably misfire when hot.
A petrol smell does point more towards a leak of some kind. have a really good look at the whole fuel system, especially around the tank, filler neck, breather, fuel lines. :)

after filling up with fuel drive a few miles as soon as you pull over check the body work around the filler for fuel staining could be pinched breather causing it to vaccume back out.

Ok thanks very much for that peeps I will have a look for leaks because she deffo needs choke when cold and no back firing. What sort of mpg range is normal say from main road cruising at 55 please anyone?

Arond 25 to 30 mate;-)

Thankyou I'm only getting around 23. Mind you samething happens driving my car, maybe its my driving style.

That's around the ball park mate. A few handy tweaks should see you getting a few more maybe!

Hi Simon.

I've been having the same problem. Getting about 22 mpg, but Tims reply about black smoke when starting, starting cold with no choke and ocassionally misfiring when hot describes my van spot on. So hopefully will just need to get the mixture right.

When a mate of mine can fit it in, he's going to fit a servo, and i'll ask him to have a look at setting the mixture. If he tells me anything that might be of use to you, i'll post it.

Good luck with your van.

Hi Scott. How's the freedom going with Rebecca away?

The van is currently sitting on my drive, under a motorhome cover still, waiting for a few jobs to be done. Think i might have the storage thing sorted though. A friend knows a farmer who has space in his barn. Just waiting for them to get back to me.
Now the weather has turned for the worse, i'd like to get it out of the rain.

How's Duke? Still got clutch problems?

The freedom is actually horrible to be honest. We don't often spend a lot of time apart so you tend to twiddle thumbs a lot. That said, it means i can spend my evenings rambling on internet rather than watching the tv;-) silver linings an all that. Hope you get sorted very soon mate as the weather is really on the change at the mo. I just went to get some firewood in and i couldn't see my hand in front of my face it's that foggy.

Duke is still off the road at the mo too which i'm not too worried about as i wouldn't get out in it much now anyway. Will get it sorted within the next month or so i guess? If you find yourself up this way any time soon Matt feel free to call in, we have plenty of room and the kettle is always on here. Plus we have a well stocked beer fridge too;-)

Not forgetting matt that you've got more weight to ferry around (the coachbuilt not your frame!) and its not quick as aerodynamic (not much in it though)

Cheers for the invite Scott. Would be nice to catch up without having to wait for the next meet. Will let you know if we're likely to be up that way. And feel free to let us know if your ever down here.

Admin - Thought you were calling me a lard arse for a minute! Although you wouldn't be the first. I must admit i don't expect to get much more than 25 mpg from a Tourstar. But getting the mixture sorted, a new carb and re-attaching the air filter (which fell off completely on the way back from Coventry) should help.

Matt, the single biggest improvement in fuel economy is gained by installing an unrestrictive exhaust system ;)

Hi Tim.

When you say "system", does that include replacing the manifold? And can you give me any idea of what that would cost?

I think I need to make a list of things to do, their order of importance, what jobs i can do myself(very few!) and then start saving like crazy to get the rest done before the summer, so she's running as well as i can get her.

So far i've got air filter, new carb, get the mixture right and the exhaust system you mentioned. Not to mention the cosmetic stuff like dealing with rust before it gets too bad. I think i need to buy a lottery ticket.

If you are REALLY serious about it then everything from the exhaust valve. but in reality the biggest restriction is in the silencers, so just replace the system from where the boxes start, there is a excellent set up for mini,s called an RC40 which is totally straight through but still silences very well, available for about £50, or £125 in stainless from the mini spares centre in london, or ebay. Both sybhil and the j4 have one fitted, it requires a bit of modifying to fit, a couple of hours and a welder :) or if you get stuck call me ;)
Good luck with the lottery ticket :D

My best ever MPG in the highwayman was 28 wind behind speed fifty or less on the M6 a few years ago, worst was a mere 14 [:0] trundling through London traffic, about 22 sounds overall sounds about right to me.

Carb setting, does anyone else use a colourtune plug? Pretty useful device for setting tickover, with my standard Zenith carb I've also noticed when you blip the throttle the blue (good) flame goes orange due to the extra fuel injected by the boost pump but stays orange/yellow for a good 20-25 seconds as the excess fuel burns off, before slowly going blue again! so lots of hard throttle, lots of wasted petrol.

Cheers Tim.

I'll probably have to contact you for some advice/help in the new year when i've saved my pennies. Unless those lottery numbers come up.... then i'll buy a big shed and lock all of you lot in it until you have taught me all there is to know about Commers. Which may take a while.
