Ideas on improving traction?

Howdoo, just wondering if anyone has tried anything to improve traction on their commer. Ive managed to get stuck on the farm 3 times yesterday so i would love to know any ideas on how to improve things. First i thought of off road tyres then are there any 15" or 16" rims that fit to enable landrover type tyres to be used. Then thought limited slip diff or diff lock even. Maybe just a pile of bricks in the back. cheers paul
 
Fit the handbrake to the rear wheels and when one wheel begins to spin haul on the brake. Acts like a LSD to a degree.
I doubt you would find a lsd or locker that would fit the commer axle. Even then they are so piss weak it would prob just snap half shafts.

I just need a good rootes...
 
drop your rear tyre pressures, increase the fronts and stick some weight in the back

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.
 
bigmonkeyman ran BFG ATs on his Highwayman for such reasons - I thought it looked pretty cool!

These are the know wheels that will fit the Commer stud pattern, taken from the mechanical section on the homepage.

127mm PCD ,same as Rover P5, SD1, pre 89 Jeep Cherokee
also 5 stud Ford P100 pick up .. & some newer Transits

Good place to start is checking your eBay for second hand rally tyres. Prices depend on how worn they are, but a worn rally tyre generally still has a lot of life left in them. Should be a number of 15" sizes that are more normal compared to 4wd/off road tyres. The rally tyres used for snow are generally the narrowest one you will find.

Traction will always be an issue, especially where you are driving. Yes an LSD is great, however if there is little or no weight over the driving wheels you'll just spin both rear wheels instead of one.
 
Thanks for the ideas, looks like tyres are a good place to start and probably cheap option.It has to be fitted out as a camper yet so i will bear that in mind and try to get some weight over the back. I did put 50 accrington bricks in the back and it didnt make much difference but one of the front brakes is sticking so that wont help either.
 
When I got stuck in a field last Spring I used some sheets of chipboard to get my commer moving. And it worked.

I tried snow chains in mud and it certainly didn't work. Spending my life getting stuck on festival sites I was very disappointed as thought it was going to be the way forward. Might just be the welsh mud though...
