well I was going up a steep but short hill. ralph cut out, stopped. I noticed the fuel gauge was low and therefore thought that he had run out of fuel. thought it would be good idea to put some 2 stroke from my scooter in. no good so travelled to get a gallon of unleaded. still no start, so call aa. he reckons the carb will be blocked with 2 stroke, and the only course of action is to empty fuel, strip down carb and clean. anyone like to comment ? apart from maybe im a dick
 
I don't claim to know much about these things (not a good start!) but I really can't see a drop of 2 stroke oil causing that much of a problem. Commer engines aren't modern highly tuned things with fuel injection etc.

I doubt the oil will attach itself to the rubber components in the fuel system and old cars often have plenty of oil in the combustion chambers (thanks to damaged rings etc.)

If he still won't start - then the problem must lie elsewhere.

Probably oiled up the plugs. If you don't flush the system out you'll be smoking more than that firepit [:0]

it was only half a litre of 2 stroke. thats why I didn't think I would hurt but may be your right about plugs ill check as im not sure about taking carb to bits . then maybe we will be smoking !!!
 
Shouldn't need to strip the carb down, it's only got a float chamber full of 2 stroke but if you put it in the tank it might be an idea to drain it and swill it out with fresh petrol.

i know what i would do in this situation. firstly id fill the tank full to the brim with petrol, id then disconnect the fuel pipe to the carb and turn the van over whilst someone holds the end off the pipe into a bowl, so you can get some clean fuel through the pipes. then i would reconnect it up and then id take the air filter off the carb and put a big squirt off fuel directly into the carb. then i would give her a fire up and see if it does the trick. but hey thats my solution,best of luck with it.:p[:0];)
 
the AA bloke was talking rubbish, there is no way that the 2/s mix will have blocked anything ,as woolfy says just fill it up with fresh and it will dilute naturally. it would run on 2/s it would just smoke more than normal.
you may have sucked up some crud from the tank if it was very empty [xx(]

I dont reckon 2 stroke would block the carb - crud would maybe.

Reading your question carefully I notice that you thought maybe you had run out of fuel. Therefore maybe you hadnt.....and it was another problem that caused the van to stop. This other problem has not yet been fixed, and that is what is stopping the engine from running. The 2 stroke is just an unfortunate red herring.

thanks jules . I feel you maybe onto something. would a broken vaccum pipe on the dizzy have any affect, as I don't understand what its for ? will get some fresh fuel and clean plugs tomorrow and then see what the score is. thank u all 4 your advice.

You need the vacuum pipe on for the dizzy to work correctly ;)
 
Vacuum pipe missing shouldnt stop it running, but will mean it wont rev smoothly. I dont think this is the non start problem. As it came to a sudden stop its likely to be ignition rather than fuel (unless the pump has packed up) Go through the usuals: eg check for spark at leads, then at points etc, check cap for hairline crack etc)

is the van actually turning over when you turn the ignition key or is it just dead but the lights all come on, because if it is like that then check behind you ignition barrel to see if any wires have come off. it happened to me a while ago same thing the car just cut out whilst going up a hill, and thats what it turned out to be, id knocked off one of the wires to the key with my knee.;)
