Hunter GLS overdrive gearbox mods

We're about to get our Hunter GLS o/d gearbox refurbed and modded to fit the Commer :p

I believe these GLS boxes have a slighter lower ratio to standard, which might suit the Commer better overall but will have 'less legs' as a result - can't see that being too much of an issue for 65mph to provide more flexibility around town.

For this conversion I understand we need to swap over the following Commer parts to avoid slant fitting and custom linkages ;

a) Top selector
b) Bellhousing
c) Input shaft

I'm thinking rather than junk our non-o/d box just for these bits only, which seems a shame as it's in GWO and done us proud over our 3,000 miles or of ownership.

So I'm thinking does anybody want to swap the above 3 items for our full gearbox ?

Failing that, just sell the 3 items above ?

The figures i have for commer

4.105 1st
2.331
1.516
1.00

And hunter

3.122 1st
1.993
1.296
1.00
.803 0/d

So 4th is the same (as usual) on both, so overall gearing is unchanged, just the bonus of o/d.

gls 1st 2nd and 3rd are taller and all the gears are closer together, which means you spend more time in the "maximun driving force" region, if that can be applied to a Commer :I

Thanks for the info Tim - 'maximum driving force', indeed [:0]

When you the say gears are closer together, apart from the ratio differences (ie. taller) do you also mean the physical selection mechanism ? eg. what I'd call a tighter 'H' ?

If so, do you see this being a plus or minus running a GLS gearbox on a Commer ? My logic says a 'plus' due to less movement required between gear selection - or am I missing a vital point here in my naivety ?

Given that the Commer manual advices pulling off in 2nd gear, with 1st reserved for being fully loaded on a gradient etc, the taller GLS ratios I'm not expecting to be an issue at all for use as a camper. Especially with almost double the horses hopefully available !

What i mean by closer gears is the gaps between the ratios are smaller, so the revs will drop less. Nothing to do with the H that will be the same, your linkages govern that. :)
