Hubcaps

No luck in the end. So will have to sort out the old ones. He has just be serviced and pulls much better but a small hole in manifold has burnt a hole in plastic bit on altinator. Is manifold mild steel or cast? Garage can weld mild steel

Bother. Hope they aren't too hard to come by. Garage did say they can take it somewhere that can weld cast?

The original ones are normally fine, it's the repro ones that have a habbit of pinging off - especially when wheel trims and new balance weights are fitted:(
If it's a used one try turning the hub cap until you see where the edge of the cap was previously located on the lug on the wheel, locate the edge on two of the lugs and give it a good whack with the palm of you hand. Then knock it in all directions to seat it.

I think that if they are on properly they are unlikely to fall off. Mine fit on 3 smartie type lugs on wheel. Short of epoxy a bit of wire on back of cap and tying round hole in wheel?? Would possibly do more damage if it did come off flaying around??

My experience is that the standard hub caps fit well and don't generlly fall off. But when I tried fitting trims, which are held in place by the hubcaps, the thickness of metal behind the hubcaps meant they would easily pop off. I've ditched the trims now, and not had any trouble since.

Hi all just a quick one. Just had all my tyres done as they were very old. So as its newish to me clean slate and all that. 3 miles later and a missing hubcap, blooming tyre fitters. I have got 4 that came in box of bits but will need rechroming. So my qu is get a new set or re do the tatty ones?
I believe AB classics has some. I bought a set Appx £130 & there good. I've got there number if you want it

I managed to find a set of pb hubcaps at a Autojumble so i have a couple spare if anybody is in need. They would need painting or re chroming. I stuck this on the other hubcap thread

I had a hub cap that would not stay in place. I had removed the front wheels to apply some waxoyl under the wheel arches, but the driver's side hub cap did not feel right when pressed (or even wacked) onto the three button pieces on the wheel rim.
Anyway, after 300 yards down the road the inevitable happened and the hub cap pinged off and cart-wheeled across the road, while the fancy trim piece was mashed by an oncoming van. Managed to bend it straight again though.:)

So I have resorted to a more mechanical fix. I drilled and tapped the three button pieces, dead central. Then I set up the hub cap on the milling machine and drilled three clearance holes for the screws. The screws are resting on a curved profile so not ideal, but at least it won't come off now.
