So, when I was stripping the paint off the front panel of my van (in order to weld my nice new panels from Martin in). I came across a lot of filler on the length of the left hand side of the panel. Very thick in some places. The funny thing was that there is no paint under the filler. It would seem that the original colour of the van was a light shade of beige and this starts on top of the filer. The filler is covering a load of welding that has been done below the indicator/sidelight molding. When I cut into the panel it became apparent 3 strips of metal in the shape of a triangle has been welded on the back. There is no way with the front panel fitted to the van that this could be done. you just cant get to it.

So how and why is it like this?

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

If they've been welded from the inside then the only conclusion is - nano-bots with migs:)

If nano-bots did it they had a very bad blue print! we have all seen what happens when nano-bots have bad blue prints!

This has to have been a repair job. The whole panal was most likley removed for repair and then re painted. Not a good plan to put filler direct on bare metal as it holds the moisture with obvious consequences. At least get a couple of coats of primer on under it. Are the strips seam welded or plug welded? could have been plug welded from the outside then ground flush. What colour are you going to use for the finish?

Well...alright then, maybe just a little...

Surely the filler is supposed to bond to the metal? If it's all sealed and painted properly afterwards no moisture can get to the metal.

No expert here but would have thought that is just a corner accident repair.
Can't see why one would want to remove the whole front panel for that.
As for filler on bare metal, done it for years so long as the metal is dry and rust free, indeed found it advisable to avoid 'mapping'.
 
there are know signs to show the panel has been off ever, nor that the floor has been removed inside, to get to the back of the panel.
If you look at the indicator/sidelight molding it is all rippled, very odd.
I think it was must have happened in the factory.
