I don't think there can be more than 500 on the road? Maybe more in various states of restoration? If Gary can assist with journalistic DVLA enquiries that would be great to know

To be honest, I'd be surprised if there were 500 actually on the road. I think that's more likely the number actually left, in all conditions.
