How do i fit electronic ignition?

Hi All,

I am thinnking of fitting electronic ignition to my commer (1725cc).

could anyone tell me how I go about this?

Do I buy a distributor with the electronics already in it (like they sell on the rootesparts site, or can you get the electronics to retro fit into the dizzy that I already have on there? (I know that Lumention sell a kit for MGs but not sure if this would be suitable for the commer?).

Aldon automotive do a good one that is simple to fit and very good for about £70 :)

Hello,
I'm also considering a fit. After the research I did, I decided that the lumention kits were just distributor specific so doesn't matter what the use is (its just replacing the points and condenser) so long as its for a LUCAS 45D .

For more fancy ones (like http://www.123ignition.nl/ and the RootesParts.com one) replace the whole dizzy and therefore need to be application specific as the advance etc. are set by the bob weights and springs (or clever electronics) and are dependant on the mass of the vehicle, performance etc. etc.

This is just from the info I have collected, there is no practical experience in there!

well i always had a problem with my engine not running sweet ( i aint no mechanic but i know when something isnt right) i changed all sorts but did not solve anything until i replaced the distributor and upgraded it to a lumenition conversion which i purchased from MGOC, i think it was for a D4 Lucas.
 
I've got the aldon version fitted to the alpine and it works fine - no difference to performance - but more reliable and no points faffing.

Fitting the 'Flamethrower' coil made quite a difference to the smoothness of the idle.
 
rupert, i have never heard these terms before [?] the only thing i can think it might be is one type might have a lightly oiled felt pad to lube the cam :)

I think self wiping points have different action to the normal ones. Where normal points simply open and close self wiping have a slight brushing action of the contacts, when they close they rub very slightly across each other, so in effect they clean themselves.

The optical eye in the Luminition needs cleaning regularly, which is its weak point. These are the best;);)

Hi,

I am quite interested in the rootesparts.com electronic dizzy but am not sure if I have a cast iron or aluminium head on my 1968 commer camper. (is there a difference in the dizzy??)

Any help gratefully received as I have been trawling ebay for new electronic distributors (mine is shot - vacuum advance not working, worn lobes etc).

There is one on there for £50 made by autoera suitable for mini, MG, austin etc - has anyone had any experience of these? I am also worried that with these, the advance curve won't suit the engine although I guess that the rootes one will be perfect??

Hope someone can give me some advice on what to get as although I could go for the aldon or lumenition magnetic system, the vacuum advance on my dizzy is gone and who knows if the mechanical advance is still working!!!

The 123 ones from Rootes parts have adjustable advance curves - so there should be no problem there! I fitted the Aldon kit (once I had got the right one:I ) and its really good! only took about 10 minutes to fit - the trickiest bit was getting into the dizzy as there ain't a lot of space

Apparently you can order Aldon (Pertronix is just Aldon's American name) ignition systems from this Retro Rockets site (http://www.vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/) which is American but for some reason it's massively cheaper, even though the warehouse is in England (so you're not paying tax when it arrives in the country). Don't understand it exactly but he says he paid £50 for his ignition system. May be worth looking at if you can figure out which one you need for your Commer.
