hot air pick up assembly

been having a bit of a rummage through my spares today and have come across a commer hot air pickup unit. seems to be an optional accesorie fitted to the later spacevan gpo models and works as an atra intake assebly to boost airflow into the carb. bit of rootes tuning? will post some pics when im home from work

As it says hot air pickup, is it intended as an alternative air intake for winter working, picking up air from close to the exhaust manifold?
