Well, that lasted longer than I thought. I've put 500 odd miles on Babs since getting her and she's run faultlessly. Until now. Had her rested up for a few days while I've welded the front panel, floor pan repairs and refitted the interior (pics to follow on the appropriate thread) however I go to start her now and she won't idle happily. Stripped the carb (weber 34ICH) and cleaned everything, followed the guidelines for setting idle/idle mixture but still no good. if she does idle it's only with an increase in revs and it's not smooth, then revs drop off and cuts out. Restarts ok with a bit of throttle, revs ok but then settles, ticks over poorly and does the same thing. I've had a good look and it seems you read nothing but poor things about the 34ICH, which may or may not be deserved. Any idea's anyone? I'm back out to check for air leaks, after that I'm fresh out of idea's!
 
well I'm defo no expert but any little helps right.......clean the jets with a bike pump with a football nozzle, check the fuel pump seal (if its a metal top one, just undo the 10mm nut on top and the seal is there) other than tat I'm not much help:I

I'm definitely no expert:I, but I would try a compression test(if you haven't already) and take it from there:)
 
Indeed, I felt quite hurt that she'd behave this way after all the attention I've given her so far. Anyhow, checked for air leaks, there is none, had another twiddle of the idle screw and idle mixture screw and seem to have found a bit of a balance. Idles better, but holds revs after 'blipping' the throttle, takes a fair few seconds for the revs to drop back. Checked nothing obvious like the accelerator cable catching etc. Don't want to think about compression tests because that's serious... however I know there's a little bit of emulsion inside the oil filler cap and you do get a little more smoke on start up than you should probably get, but I'm not going to do it. If I ignore that possibility it will go away.
 
It sounds like you've compensated for a lean mixture on idle by adjusting everything, not it's running too rich when you blip the throttle. Try running it and squirt WD40 around all the joints, if there's a leak you will hear the engine note change as it gets sucked in. I seem to remember Chasbaps had similar problems.
