Highwayman greetings from Classics Monthly

Hello Commer Van Fans,

I recently bought a Highwayman listed on eBay. Having driven it 200 miles home, at an average 48mph, tooting at forlorn VW campers on the M5's hard shoulder, I can say how charmed I am by my Commer. She needs TLC - front brake inbalance was an MOT failure two days after I got her home.
I'm sure I'll be asking for lots of advice, encouragement and deserving of much amusement for Commer fans in my efforts to make the Highwayman a family-friendly classic.
I'll keep posting on CVF but you can also read more at http://www.classicsmonthly.com/2010/07/01/commer-highwayman-joins-garys-fleet/ and in Classics Monthly every month.

All the best,
Gary

OOOh a celebrity Commer! Welcome and congratulations on an informed buying decision.

Front brake inbalance VERY common at MOT time!

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Hi Gary and welcome to the Madhouse:D
As a professional journalist I would have thought that you'd have been made of saner stuff but glad you have seen the light and not been tempted over to the darkside[8D] Looking forward to reading your updates - any more pics:p

Welcome Bessie Bus to the very mad madhouse [)]

Good idea you coming to Commerfest, You will be able to ask for lots of advice in person and this lot will be more than happy to advise.

Don't ask me, I know nothing [:0] I just pretend, but don't tell anybody cos they think I know everything [^]

I do know that you getting a COMMER will be the best thing you have ever done :D

Congratulations, Gary !

As already suggested, come along to the Commerfest - and bring your notebook and camera! You could grace a future magazine issue with a proper Commer report ! :D

I'm sure it will be the greatest number of Commer vans seen together since loads of yellow panel vans were parked ex-gate at the Commer factory in Dunstable many moons ago awaiting delivery to BT [^]

Thanks everyone for your encouragement.
I spoke with Martin Maltas recently who suggested Commerfest. Alas, the timing is all wrong for me, although I would have been prepared to drive BB back up the country, MOT pass permitting. Perhaps I'll get to meet some of you at the NEC Classic Motorshow?

I'll post more pics soon. BB seems pretty original from my research and has been used regularly by previous owner Iain and his family for the last five years, which is better than a classic stood still for that length of time.

Current plans include overdrive 'box, a heater (to replace the battery draining, non-original idunnowhat currently fitted) A Zig or similar charging control unit, retrim/refoam of all the cushions, front seats with headrests and most importantly three seats belts behind the front seats to hold three child/baby seats.

Seatbelt fitting advice especially welcome.

Not much then.:D

Oh, did I mention the mastic removal marathon, BP-esque engine oil leak, and new section of side aluminium panel?

All the best,
Gary
