Just an introduction as I'm new to this forum and to owning a Commer (which might lead to needing some help here and there :) ). I'm a 27 year old, from Utrecht in the Netherlands, and recently bought a Commer Wanderer from 1968 or possibly 1972. I'm not completely sure as there is a lot of info that came with the van, full of documentation on a tourstar caravan (most likely same chassis number and license plate) that was almost completely taken apart, but no info on what happened after that. So I'll try to get in touch with some of the previous owners to find out what went on and how the van came out to be the beauty it is now.

I'm planning to leave on holiday soon, taking the Commer (and my boyfriend) for a drive to the south of France and Italy, but am still working on some mechanical and electrical issues - temperature gauge, fuel gauge among other things are not working properly. So these are things I might have some questions about later on!
 
Hi there Sandra and welcome. It sounds like you have got a few bits and bobs to sort out but by and large it looks like you've bagged your self a little beauty (I love the colour). I'm sure between us we will be able to fire out some handy info as it's a busy little forum full to the brim of at least one knowledgeable person ;)
 
Hi Sandra, lovely looking van. You are not alone in the Netherlands, another member is just getting his Commer ready for the road. The Tourstar is a completely different van, being a large coach built camper, so no connection with your van, unless it was stripped for parts to repair yours. The temperature and fuel gauge issues could be a faulty voltage stabilizer.

I agree with Martin, your problem with the gauges does sound like the stabiliser as the fuel and temp gauges are the only things it feeds. Easy fix with only a few wires to swap over onto a new one - you've got to find it first;)

Thanks for the tips on the voltage stabilizer - I already read somewhere it can be a bit difficult to localize. I have no idea what the thing looks like but I will look into that. I had some issues with a very sudden (and big) oil leak at the back axle/differential. Turned out the oil seal was in very poor condition. So fixed that today (thanks to my dad's helping hands, he's teaching me a LOT).
I have some other questions but will check if there is already a thread about those subjects or I should start a new one.

The voltage stabiliser is under the dash just to the left of the steering wheel. It's mounted on the bracket that holds the dash in place (there's an oval hole in it that looks like an ideal place to mount a speaker) right at the bottom by the dash bottom rail. The stabiliser is only small, looks a bit like a rectangular relay made of aluminium, with one wire going into it and two (I think) coming out.
